Show SPORTS B2 Winn shines at rodeo nationals BY GANT STOKES Sports Wrier The Wolverine rodeo club is putting in a strong showing at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR). The event began Sunday, June 12th at the Casper Events center in Casper Wyoming. With over 100 universities represented, the Wolverines are proving they belong with the best. The team took six riders competing in six different events, and all are in the running to make their respective short rounds (finals) for each event. The athletes compete in three rounds called go rounds to qualify for the short round. The top 12 in each event qualify for the short round. "All six have a good shot at making the short round, and we would be very pleased to see that," Draper said. Draper added that he is "extremely proud of the whole team," stating that "all six are stand-out men in my mind " Much of rodeo is the luck of the draw game. Before each event, each competitor randomly draws to see what animal he/she will compete with, hoping to get a bull or horse that will provide a good ride and lots of points. Draper has been proud of the team's reaction to its respective draws this season. "They haven't let bad draws bother them this year," he said. Three riders have stepped up to lead the Wolverines at CNFR this year. Broc Winn has been "a real standout," according to Draper. The sophomore bronc rider entered the weekend short round first overall. Winn's first go was particularly impressive given the unfriendly conditions. "He showed a lot of try and grit to weather the storm" Draper said, "[He put] together one of the best rides of the weekend. " Senior Caleb Bennett put together what Draper called "three of the best rides of the week in the bare back riding." Bennett, in third place as of Thursday, will also be making the short round and hoping for a good draw for his final ride. Draper has been really proud of Bennett's performance and how his teammates look to him. Ben Carson, who is competing in a timed event the steer wrestling, strung together three good times to lock his place in the short round. He had an exceptional run Wednesday out of the chute. Carson's steer dropped its head, a situation where most competitors would have lost control, but according to Draper he "stuck with it and pulled it out to get a qualifying run." As of Thursday Luke Pullham and Ryley Johnson were in 33rd and 31" place, respectively, with both holding favorable draws for their third go's. Chris Roundy, the bull rider of the group, was bucked off his first two bulls. A good ride on his third go, however, could earn him a spot in the short round, Draper said. "He has a good draw," Draper said. "The bull fits his style and he should get lots of points." The Wolverines' overall performance added up to a good standing going into the final days of CNFR, placing them 20th before the weekend. With all six riders having a chance to make the short round, the team is excited to see where they end up when the dust settles. Draft will determine Jazz's future With 2 lottery picks and multiple assets, Utah is primed to improve BYJOSH CANN Sports Writer This is easily the most intriguing draft in Utah Jazz history. A season after the legend Jerry Sloan and superstar Deron Williams left, there's a fresh feeling among Jazz fans. With the addition of Tyrone Corbin as head coach along with Devin Harris and Derrick Favors, the Jazz now have this year's No. 3 and 12 picks in the NBA draft. So that leaves the question, who do the Jazz take? With the inclusion of nationwide "Jimmermania," there's a lot of local pressure to take the kid. Heck, even NBA experts think the Jazz will take him. So will Utah take the consensus National Player of the Year from Provo No. 12 and European big man Kanter at No. 3? Or do they take point guard Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker third, and squash Jimmer Nation by taking someone else twelfth? What we know is the two positions the Jazz are in most need of are shooting guard and backup point guard. That's why Jimmer enthusiasts are lobbying hard for Jimmer to take his talents to Salt Lake. The fact is, the Jazz have never had a star shooting guard in recent history. Jazz fans may argue for the likes of Jeff Hornacek, Bryon Russell, and Wes Matthews. In reality, as effective as they were, they weren't all-stars or heralded as franchise players. The Jazz have had many star point guards in their history; Pete Maravich, John Stockton, and Deron Williams being the most notable. They're also all title-less. Of course, Utah went to the Finals in 1997 and '98, only to lose to the best shooting guard to ever play the game. The Jazz are seemingly set with their bigs. They sport Al Jefferson (looking more and more like an All-Star every day at center), Millsap, and the new-comer Favors. Homacek says he would be shocked if Favors wasn't an all-star in four years. Add Okur, Elson, Fesenko to that list and the Jazz look solid down low. At point guard the Jazz have Harris, a top-ten point guard in the league according to Nuggets head coach George Karl. Backing Harris is UVU product Ronnie Price along with Earl Watson. Statistically speaking, both are very weak links. Here's my proposal to solve the Jazz' unending problems. It's actually quite easy. Pick up Lebron James. I'm kidding. The Jazz are committed to taking the best player available, which according to experts might be Kanter, Knight, or Walker with the No. 3 pick. The Jazz should take Kanter. This gives the Jazz four solid bigs in a three-man rotation and options they've never had before. Favors is staying put. Jefferson is a keeper as well. This leaves Millsap as the odd man out. A trade package involving CJ Miles, Raja Bell, and next year's first-round pick as the kicker, with the main course being Millsap, could be enticing enough to pick up Brandon Roy from the Blazers, who've shown interest in Millsap in the past. Or Danny Granger from the Pacers who could have a Millsap-Hansborough combo underneath, with CJ and Raja replacing Granger in the backcourt. At the very least a look at Andre Iguodala or Tayshaun Prince. Both are scoring threats who'd be great additions in the backcourt. Then, the icing on the cake, take Jimmer at No. 12. Who doesn't want the Jimmer in a Jazz jersey? He'd sell tickets, jerseys, etc. He'd also bring the Jazz much needed depth, 3-point shooting, and bench scoring. Could Jimmer pull a Jason Terry or J.J. Barea type role for the Jazz? He very well could. The roster would look like this with my proposed solution: PG- Harris, Fredette, Watson SG- Granger/Roy, Hayward SF- Kirilenko, Evans PF- Favors, Kanter, Elson C- Jefferson, Okur, Fesenko All I know is on June 23rd' all eyes will be glued to the tube, waiting to see the future destiny of the Utah Jazz, and of course, "The Jimmer."
