The NWCA also released its Individual AllAcademic wrestling team for the 2010-11 wrestling season on Thursday and UVU's Benjamin Kjar, Justin Morrill, Flint Ray and Josh Wilson all made the cut. As a team the Wolverines combined for a 3.13 team GPA to earn the ninth-place selection for the second consecutive season. The ninth-place finish pitted UVU one spot ahead of Cornell and two places before National Champion Penn State. The Wolverines tied for third for the most individuals making the All-Academic team with four. Kjar (3.18 cumulative GPA), Morrill (3.59 cumulative GPA) and Ray (3.67 cumulative GPA) were all 2011 NCAA Qualifiers while Wilson (3.72 cumulative GPA) just missed qualifying for Nationals but had a good enough win-loss record on the year to qualify for the list. The honor was Kjar, Morrill and Ray's second while for Wilson it was his first. Also on Thursday the Capitol One Academic All-America At-Large Team presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) was announced and the senior VERMILLION, S .D . Josi Summers struck out 11 batters for Utah Valley in a Great West Conference Tournament elimination game May 16 in Vermillion, S.D. but it wasn't enough as North Dakota came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Wolverines 3-2. "This game summed up our season quite well. Josi pitched very well again for us and a few kids like Russell and Robinson stepped up offensively at big times but overall it was a lethargic effort from a number of kids especially on the defensive end," UVU head coach Todd Fairbourne said. "And in the end it cost us." With their backs against the walls in a must-win game, the Wolverines put up an early run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. Deianna Russell got the big hit in the inning with an RBI double to left that scored Mandy Tapia, who had previously reached on a fielder's choice. In the second, Kyli Flanary continued to swing her hot bat by leading off the frame with double. The Wolverines then manufactured her run by bunting \A/ W.WOLVERI RATES STARTING MOVE 114 DURING ME MONTH OF TUNE, PM WE'LL, OK SUMMER: WAIVE YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT OF $250! * STARTING REDEEM THS AD 014 A OUR DURING THE MONTH I GET A $10 MINES GIFT CARD! After striking out two UND batters in the first, Summers then went on to strike out the side in the second and the third. The Sioux then finally got to Summers in the fifth. UND's Cami Bennett doubled and Brittany Baker followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-all. The home run snapped Summers' tournament scoreless inning streak at 15 and a third frames. In the last of the seventh, a Wolverine error helped North Dakota load the bases with just one out. Summers then came through by striking out the next hitter for the second out. With the game on the line, Summers drew a high popup from UND's Brandee Ybarra in shallow center field. Samantha Telarroja, Tapia and Yocom all converged on the ball but it somehow dropped harmlessly in between them to give the Fighting Sioux the 3-2 walk-off win as Bennett scored. UND would go on to lose to Houston Baptist. |
