Show B8 SPORTS Wolverines' regular season comes to end Baseball continued Consecutive wins over GWC foes cap off regluar season By Kira Terry Sports Editor Utah Valley extended their regular season record to 7-20 overall and 5-7 in conference play with consecutive wins over Houston Baptist and NJIT. The lady Wolverines wrapped up their final home game Feb. 26 in the UCCU Center by taking the 82-58 win over the HBU Huskies. Kim Bell, Jenna Johnson, Sammie Jensen, and Abbie Beutler all finished in double figures in the win. Bell and Johnson both led the lady Wolverines with a game-high 21 points. Jensen finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds — her 13th double-double of the season and Beutler put up 10 points and eight assists. After having a rough season full of game losses and then getting five wins within just over a month, Coach Cathy Nixon couldn't be prouder of her roster. "It's great to see them come out with a win," said Nixon. "I think we are learning to control the game more on both ends of the floor. I think we are coming into our own a little bit." With the win over HBU, the lady Wolverines had guaranteed themselves at least the sixth-seed for the Great West Conference tournament, but last Thursday's win over NJIT bumped them up to the fourth-seed. After loosing 52-55 to the NJIT Highlanders at home earlier this season, the lady Wolverines traveled to New Jersey Mar. 3 in hopes to split the meetings this season, and that they did with a 67-50 win. Johnson again led the lady Wolverines offensively finishing with 20 points. Jensen followed Johnson finishing with 18 points and eight rebounds in 37 minutes of play. At the half, UVU had given themselves a 33-29 lead. Right into the second 20 minutes of play, Jensen and Johnson sunk consecutive shots, taking their lead to eight. As the fourth seed in this weeks GWC tournament, the lady Wolverines will play first Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on their own court in the UCCU Center. The tournament will run Mar. 9-12 with both the women and men participating. Kira Terry/UVU Review Junior Jenna Johnson finished the regular season with a total of 361 points, 52 rebounds, 23 assists and 25 steals. 0 get better and the injury to Ricky (Jake Rickenbach) put a spin in that. We're trying to get everyone in position and get them experience and that takes time." Rickenbach was a First Team All-Conference shortstop last year and led the nation in runs per game. Finishing up the Red Raider Classic, the Wolverines were able to get revenge against Western Michigan, winning 3-1 after Cole McWhorter drove in the gamewinning runs off a basesloaded hit in the seventh inning. The Wolverines would go on to play in-state opponent Southern Utah University for a three-game stand. Krahenbuhl started right where he left off, extending his scoreless inning streak to 13 by throwing eight solid innings of shutout baseball, giving up just one hit to SUU. "I want to go out and get every hitter and beat him," said Krahenbuhl. "Every time I step on the mound I'm going to give 110 percent and I have confidence my team is going to have my back. I just want to do all I can to help the team win." The two wins from Krahenbuhl have highlighted the season thus far as UVU dropped the next two games 6-4 and 3-2. Although the defense has had its miscues, it has been the offense that has hurt the Wolverines the most. "Our offensive production just hasn't cut it so far this season," said Madsen. The Wolverines have left a total of 61 men on base through the first seven games and have struggled to get the big hit when the team needs it most. Madsen is confident that his team will get back on track and feels the team is ready to break out the bats soon, providing more run support. Fans can catch the Wolverines at home March 1719 for their only home stand until April 21.
