Senior Jordan Swarbrick started the Wolverines off with a 3-pointer to put them on the board first. Utah Valley had a small five-point lead before Haskell hit the scoreboard. At the half, the Wolverines had given themselves a 27-point lead against Haskell, 48-27. Junior transfer Isiah Williams led the Wolverines with 14 points and three rebounds. Swarbrick followed with 11 points and four rebounds while freshman Ben Aird put up 10 and brought down six rebounds. After 10 minutes into the second half, Utah Valley had spread their lead to 41 points and took their lead to as much as 53 with 2:57 to play. Robinson put up 15 points and led the team in rebounds finishing with 14. Aird finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. "Haskell, I thought, really came and played with a lot of determination and a lot of effort, with a purpose," said Coach Dick Hunsaker. "I thought they showed some execution offensively, I thought they worked hard on defense, but eventually we were able to, in our size and overall depth, wear them down. I was very impressed with Haskell and pleased the way we kept our focus and got stronger as the game went on." 26 points of the Wolverines' 98 were contributed off the bench, with Shawn Deadwiler finishing with 10 points and junior transfer Keith Thompson with eight. "I thought overall our team came out and played hard in a game where we knew what this game was about. I told the kids I didn't know if I needed this game because I have a great group of kids in my locker room, a character group of kids who play and I think are growing as competitors," said Hunsaker. The Wolverines will hit home court again on Thursday when they host Seattle University at 7 p.m. 2011 EXPERIENCED REPRESENTATIVE RETROACTIVE PAYSCALE NET ACCOUNTS COMMISSION PERCENTAGE 2 for 4% TOTAL EARNINGS Sports Brief 100 30% $1,980 $20,630 150 33% $2,970 $31,272 Utah Valley's Ben Kjar named WWC Wrestler of the Week 175 35% $3,465 $37,583 200 38% $3,960 $45,380 250 40% $4,950 $58,250 300 45% $5,940 $76,565 350 48% $6,930 $93,890 400 50% $7,920 $110,720 450 50% $8,910 $124,085 500+ 50% $9,900 $137,450 Figures based on a $495 contract value Sign up before January 31 st to be eligible for the sign-on bonuses! OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University 125-pounder Benjamin Kjar (Centerville, Utah/Viewmont HS) has been named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week by the league on Wednesday after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. Kjar wrestled his way to a third place finish and an impressive 5-1 record at the Southern Scuffle last week. The UVU senior stayed true to his pre-tournament seed of third as he won his first three bouts to advance to the semifinals. Kjar won his first match by major decision and followed it up with two straight decision victories, including an 8-6 overtime win over the higher-ranked Garrett Frey of Princeton (No. 11) in the quarters. In the semis, Kjar dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision to the three-time AllAmerican from Minnesota and sixth-ranked Zachary Sanders. After the defeat, Kjar responded by beating two more ranked foes: 16th-ranked Frank Martellotti from Penn State and 20th ranked Jason Lara of Oregon State, both by decision to truly earn his third place finish. Kjar is currently ranked 12th (by InterMat) and holds a 14-4 record on the season. The conference honor is Kjar's first of the season and seventh of his career. The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its fifth year of competition, is comprised of seven schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming. |
