Finals are coming- are you ready? By Mindy Harwood Culture Editor Finals are quickly approaching, yet there's nothing that 1 can do to keep me from doing everything 1 possibly can to procrastinate every assignment, delay taking every test and, sadly, even skipping every class. This always happens to me during the last third of the semester - "We're so close to the end!" - yet it seems so very, very far away. If my observations of my fellow students are any indication, I am not the only one who feels the doom and gloom of the last third of the semester. We may as well be a bunch of zombies, forall the energy we have. For those of you who feel the same way I do, here are some tips for productive studying. Take your time. Cramming a lot of information into a short period of time may sound like a good idea when you're running short on time and that exam is in three hours, but cramming is only for short-term memory retention. Once the test is over, the information is gone. To be sure you're actually learning the material, take your time and space studying out. I 2 multiple associations with the information, helping retain the material all the easier. Don't fixate. Most of us like to focus on one subject until it's completely mastered, often working on the same math section for two hours or conjugating those Spanish verbs for three, but experts say it's better to mix up the studying. Take a short period of time to work on the verbs, but combine that With-Some"' reading comprehension as well. This gives the brain something new to di'-"1' gest, instead of fixating on (and getting bored with) the same old thing. 3 Don't forget the practice test. 1 know I'm guilty of this, but after a long studying session, there's nothing I want less than to take a practice test. I just studied the stuff, why test myself? Experts say this mentality is a very bad one. It is highly suggested that you take time to study things through once and then test yourself on it. Self-testing is said to be twice as effective as only 4 Move. Though we've been told that it's a good idea to have a studying. * designated location for all our studyInformation found at www.NPR.org using, recent studies have shown that ing research gathered by New York Times it is a better idea to study the same reporter Benedict Carey. things in different locations, forming DO ONE NICE THING FOR ONE PERSON TODAY ~15AVF + Donate blood-plasma twice a week + Provide treatments to countless number of children and adults + Used for burns, shock and other life threatening conditions Biomat USA, Inc. 349 East University Pkwy Orem, UT 84058 Must provide photo ID, proof of residency & Social Security card This.': By the skin of the teeth, or fang if you prefer From Bl Now, for readers who are skeptical of trying yet another vampire novel, prepare to be surprised. The difference between this novel and those other vampire romances is that it has great depth of character and plot that will hold you to the very last word. This is interesting, considering Shaun himself likes fiction with depth. Unlike others, these, vampire's powers are not as extreme. Yes, they are stronger and faster, but closer to humans in nature and physical attributes. One other interesting fact readers might enjoy is that the story takes place here in Utah County, with local landmarks like Bridal Veil Falls, Utah Lake and Timpanogos High School taking center stage. Much of Roundy's success, he claims, comes from his writing process. He described it as the key to being able to write novels and stories quickly. Beginning with pre-writing, he outlined the whole of the story in a .couple of hours and from there went through drafting, revision and editing. From start to finish, it only took Roundy three months. Of course, he said he got stuck at some points with some of his characters and needed to spend time getting to know them better. Nonetheless, this process seems to work for Roundy; furthermore, it might be technique aspiring writers can utilize. So will this novel be a one-hit wonder? According to Roundy he plans on creating sequels, but at the moment is focused on marketing and letting people know about his book. He said, "I don't like to leave huge cliffhangers for my readers. I usually tie up most of the loose ends, but the very last paragraph leaves it open for continuation."
