Before this season began the Wolverines were picked to finish second, but they are striving for first. After a six-match winning streak in non-conference play, the team ran into some trouble early in conference play loosing their first two conference matches of the season to South Dakota and North Dakota. The Wolverines will have a second chance to redeem themselves against South Dakota and North Dakota when they host them Oct. 28 and 30. Last week the lady Wolverines brought themselves back in the game, sweeping conference opponent Chicago State in three sets. This week they will resume GWC play against Texas-Pan American and Houston Baptist. Last season the Wolverines won five matches against those opponents, including their win over Houston Baptist during the GWC championships. The win is more impressive considering the early call against the team for unsportsmanlike play that resulted in a red card. This came during the first 10 minutes of play, leaving the Wolverines to play one man down the remainder of the game. UVU spent the first half demonstrating their attacking skills with a series of very long tries. At the end of the half, Dan Otteson ran 92 yards downfield before touching the ball in the BYU-I goal for a successful tryMo Mitani managed a perfectly timed pass, sideways to Johnny Schumacher, to set up a 71-yard earlier in the half that resulted in a try. The third long try during the first half was a 60-yard run to the corner of the goal by Matt Lefrandt. To begin the second half, UVU played its B team, already leading 47-0. Despite the large deficit, BYU-I continued to play hard to the end of the game, managing to score two successful tries before the game ended. The B-team still played well, managing to put 24 more points on the board. The highlight of the half was Chase Boyle's recovering of a clearing kick by Schumacher to run it down : 76 yards to the opposing goal for a successful try. In all, ten UVU play- ers made successful tries, including Mitani, Tyler Jones, Aaron Manwil, Molo Tuakimoana, Vili Fonohema and Nick Dargel. Joe Carnation also had a much better day after the difficult game against Snow College, going 8- for-11 on his kicks. In the future, the men's rugby team looks forward to helping BYU-I build up their team, as they are still relatively young. UVU coach Josh Cooper hopes the team can help them play a few more games and also join the Utah Union that UVU is a member of during the next few years. The next home game for men's rugby is on Oct. 16 against Boise State University. The game begins at J:00 p.m. on the Education Field. The Wolverines will play three home games in five nights, starting Thursday, when they host North Dakota. The Fighting Siou£ were winless going into last Friday's match against South Dakota, holding a record of 0-9-1. UVU dominated last year's match against North Dakota, earning a 4-0 victory. Defender Danielle Anderson is the only player on this year's roster who scored in that match, while Kendra Buchanan is the lone return- er who assisted in that game. Saturday's upcoming game against South Dakota presents slightly stiffer competition. The Coyotes went into last Friday's match with a 3-6-2 record, one tie better than the Wolverines. South Dakota is led by freshman scorer Jenny Teslow, who had six goals on the season as of Friday. The Wolverines shut out the Coyotes 5-0 last season, lifted by then-junior Katey Turner's two second-half goals. Last year was the inaugural season for the Great West Conference, with the Wolverines running away with both the west division and the GWC tournament championship. Thursday's match will be the 'Pink with a Purpose' game where all proceeds will go toward helping former softball player Jordahn Denny, who was injured in a car accident in early May, leaving her paralyzed from the mid-torso down. Fans who wear pink will get in free to Thursday's match and the first 200 fans will receive a free T-shirt courtesy of the Utah National Guard.
