Show A9 ORIENTATION Get involved in ntramurals By NATE GRAY Sports Writer The MAWL cheers on UVU Volleyball last season in a match against USC. Whether you play sports just for fun or are proving you still have skills, UVU intramurals offer a variety of sports and activities for all students. It is also a great opportunity to get more involved on campus while meeting new people. The most popular intramural sports are sevenon-seven flag football and soccer, volleyball and basketball - all of which have different skill levels for teams to contend at, depending on their competitive desires. Courtesy of UVU Athletics The fee for teams to participate in intramurals is usually $50-$70, plus a deposit, which may be returned at the end of the season. "This year we have lowered the price of the AllSports Pass to $5 instead of $20 from last year," said Ben Knell, the current MAWL President. A MAWL pass allows free admission to every regular season NCAA home game, free food at tailgate parties, monthly giveaways, new friends and much more. Knell said it is their goal this year to, "Just have fun and make every event a social one where UVU students can get together and meet new people through the tailgates and after-parties that will be held before and aftergames." Knell also said other reasons to obtain a MAWL pass and be involved with the MAWL are, "To show school pride and spirit. This is a great opportun ity to meet new fun people and to get involved with true school spirit." MAWL passes can be used beginning August 13 as UVU Soccer begins their season at home against Westminster College. "Joining the MAWL will give every student the very affordable opportunity to not only see our incredible athletic teams at their finest, but also a great way to get to meet new people," says UVU Student Body President Richard Portwood. During the fall semester, MAWL passes can be used to watch the soccer, men's be seeded and placed into a playoff bracket that will last about two weeks. ; Teams play until they are eliminated or until they become the champions. There are also great opportunities throughout the year to participate in tournaments lasting two to three days and also singleday events like ping-pong, chess, golf or 5k runs. Champions receive intramural T-shirts and, in some cases, gift certificates to local establishments. Tournaments and singleday events either are free or usually cost up to $10-$15. For those students unable to participate in these events, but who still want to get involved, the intramural office always has a handful of "weekly picks." involves choosing winners in various and events. Wolverine athletics S By MATT PETERSEN Asst Sports Editor "Just show up once." That's the invitation issued by Assistant Athletic Director Nate Mathis. The guarantee? You'll want to come back. "Show up once, and you will feel the excitement of UVU athletics," Mathis said. 'The way we run games, the entertainment value ... it's going to get you hooked." Mathis was adamant that his endorsement was not a plea to make something out of nothing. Rather, Wolverine sports are can'tmiss spectacular events, and students should take advantage of them. "It's a great time to be a Wolverine," Mathis raves. Students don't have to take Mathis' word. The championships, awards and accolades speak for themselves. The 2009-10 campaign featured six regu- lar season conference championships, two conference tournament championships, two MLB draftees and the Great West Conference Commissioner Cup. In other words, this isn't a small-school, wannabe sports program. This is NCAA basketball, volleyball and baseball. This is a legitimate shot at March Madness, the College World Series and the National Volleyball Championship. "Last year, basketball was maybe four wins from playing in the NCAA Tournament," Mathis said. "Same for volleyball. Every sport we have has the ability to compete for a national championship. If that doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will.". Given the fairly recent transition from community college to NCAA-recognized university, the identity of Wolverine athletics has been difficult for students to grasp. That should cease this year. 40% Off Men's Band 14kt, 18kt, Platinum, Tungsten or Cobalt with diamond engagement set purchase. At the first home game of their respective seasons, each team will raise championship banners dating to the very beginnings of Utah Valley athletics, including those earned during the community college era of the school. Students will get the opportunity to not only witness, but also be part of the Wolverine sports scene. "We want to give students of all different backgrounds a chance to come watch us play," Mathis said. The idea is for today's Wolverines to be part of something the current students at Duke, USC and ASU can't do - be part of establishing the image and fervor behind their university's athletic program.
