Show Wolverines snag two from Utah State £ TYSON CAMP Sports writer The UVU softball team played host to the Utah State Aggies for a doubleheader on a blustery Tuesday afternoon. But the high winds didn't deter the Wolverines as they swept its neighbors to the north with scores of 3-1 and 13-4, while tying a couple of team records in the process. In the second game, UVU blasted four home runs to tie the school record for most in a game. Megan Gardner also wrote her name in the school record books by recording four hits, which also ties for most hits in a game. But it took a while for the Wolverine bats to wake up. In the first game, both teams managed just five hits each, but it proved to be enough for UVU as they picked up the 3-1 victory. Relief pitcher Jessica Martin picked up the win for the Wolverines. Gardner got things started early in the second game with a three-run shot in the first inning. Later in the same inning, Amanda Perez hit her team-leading fourth home run of the year to make it 5-0 for the Wolverines. After two Aggie runs. Meghan Woodworth blasted a three-run dinger in the fourth to extend UVU's lead to 9-2. Utah State would cut into the lead again with two more runs before UVU's Amber Sackett dialed up a grand slam that put the game out of reach. Kyli Flanary notched the win for the Wolverines to even her record at 6-6. With the wins, UVU improves to 12-15 while winning seven of its last eight games. Coach Todd Fairbourne said he's pleased with his team's play of late. "I am proud of them because they have learned how to win," he said. "They are winning against better and better teams." That bodes well for the Wolverines as in-state games against Utah, Weber State and BYU loom ahead. \ A UVU lacrosse enjoys home-field advantage WESLtE GRAHAM Sports writer The Utah Valley University lacrosse team had yet another successful weekend Mach 26-27. They played two victorious home games against Fort Lewis and Northern Colorado. Friday evening's weather made for snowy playing conditions against Fort Lewis on the BYU North Field. Slush notwithstanding, Utah Valley played phenomenally and sent the Skyhawks packing with a final score of 19-10. Saturday afternoon proved to be a pleasant and sunny 45 degrees for the players and many specta- tors gathered to witness Utah Valley and Northern Colorado face off behind the education building. The Wolverines were able to take the lead early in the game and maintain it to the end while Northern Colorado attempted to match their pace, always two steps behind. Halftime brought a score of 5-3 with Utah Valley working together exceptionally as a team. In the final half they scored six goals to Northern Colorado's four to make the final score 11-7. Coach Kevin Perkins remarked that the intensity of team practice has increased and this has helped the team Varney, Flanary bring home GWC, PCSC weekly honors Utah Valley's Shaylyn Varney was named Pacific Coast Softball Conference and Great West Conference Softball Player of the Week and teammate Kyli Flanary was named the PCSC and GWC Pitcher of the Week for their outstanding play at last weekend's GWC Softball Cluster. The awards were announced Tuesday by the league office. Varney, a senior catcher from Ogden, Utah, posted a .500 batting average as the Wolverines went 5-1 in the GWC event, which gives them the top seed at the GWC Championships in May. She hit .666 in three of the six games, including two home runs and four RBI versus preseason favorite South Dakota. Varney currently leads the Wolverines in hitting at .432 and is tied for second in homers (2) and is second in RBIs (14). Flanary recorded a 3-0 record with a 0.93 ERA while not allowing a wild pitch or hit batter. The junior from Bountiful, Utah has a team-best five win$ and a team-best 3.32 ERA on the season. to play as well as they do. "We're really coming together as a team," stated Perkins. Nothum shatters school record at Stanford Invitational Utah Valley junior Mary Nothum shattered the 5000-meter run school record Friday night at the 2010 Stanford Invitational. The meet features some of the top high school and collegiate talents from around the nation as well as a few pros. Nothum placed second overall in her section of the 5000m race, finishing the distance run with an impressive time of 17:00.41. The new record beats the previous one by more than 30 seconds. Also competing for UVU at the meet was senior Jacob Buhler and sophomore Tim Rowberry. Rowberry competed in the 800-meter run and placed tenth overall with a solid time of 1:51.37, a mere second off of the school record. Buhler also competed in the 5000m run as he placed 24th with a time of 14:54.83.
