Show NSIDE 7 .,.? Bye, bye Boise State MATT BEAUDIN Sports editor The Boise State wrestlers and coaches - ranked eighth in the nation - sat in a stunned stupor as Cason Eldridge battled the Broncos heavyweight competitor Sam Zylstra, propelling the Wolverines to the upset win. Eldridge, who wrestles at 184 pounds, grappled with Zylstra in order for UVU to avoid forfeiting the match. Although Zylstra rallied in the third period to win the match on a late takedown, the heroics of Eldridge allowed the Wolverines to hold on to their slim lead and win the dual. "It was a great win for our program." said UVU coach Greg Williams. "First and foremost our guys came in with the mentality to go out and wrestle the best they could. Anytime you go out and beat a team ranked as high as Boise is. it is a huge win for your program." UVU lacrosse prepared for spring season WESUE GRAHAM Sports writer The UVU lacrosse team will begin a promising spring season playing top competitors in the MCLA Vegas Full House Tournament Feb. 19-20, followed by a game against local rival Brigham Young University on Feb. 27. This will be the first spring season game opposing BYU in at least five years. On March 13 the Wolverines will take on the Westminster Griffins in Salt Lake City. UVU dominated Westminster twice in fall ball and emerged victorious in a dogfight opposing the Griffins in spring 2009 as well. The team will travel next to Salem, Ore. to play Willamette University, Western Oregon University and the University of California-Santa Cruz. After returning home, UVU will play Fort Lewis, 2009 conference champions University of Northern Colorado, Metro, Northern Arizona and Montana. On April 17 the team* will travel north to play Utah State in Logan, followed by rival University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Sixth year Utah Valley head coach Kevin Perkins has high expectations for the spring season. After the team's riveting fall season, (12-2) including tournament play, the team is prepared for a successful season to say the least. The spring season team consists of 29 returning players with 11 new and a record 19 freshmen of the 40 players overall. Freshman standouts include Blake Porter, Jake Hansen, Shawn Carter, Brian Tyr- rell and Quinton Jorgensen. Returning standouts include Tyler Spendlove, Kyle Harper, Chad Frost, Austin Nielsen, Clark Harris and Trevor McCann. The senior squad is a talented group that took last year off. Now back and refocused, Cam Peterson anchors the attack with his ability to lead and finish, Ryan Cantwell and Skyler Bentley control the defensive side, Cory Heward in the cage, and Greg Newman, once an attackman turned mid, has a dominating presence with the ball. Seniors Claudio Pacchiega, Tallon Boles along with junior Kyle Barlocker, and sophomore Davis Smith add to the depth of the talented defense as a whole. "I'm very pleased with the team and their progress," said Perkins. 'The effort they're putting in both on and off the field is making a big difference and I feel very confident about our first game." UVU records tough conference win TYSON CAMP Sports writer With Houston Baptist coming to town tied for the top spot in the Great West Conference, UVU looked to one of its seniors to lead the Wolverines to victory. Enter Jordan Swarbrick. The 6-foot-6 guard from El Dorado, Calif, led the way with 21 points as the Wolverines sent the Huskies packing with a 72-66 victory. Swarbrick also notched team highs with seven rebounds and five assists to help UVU pick up its second straight GWC victory. The Wolverines got off to a rough start, falling behind by nine with 6:44 left in the first half. But UVU's defense would hold the Huskies scoreless over the next five minutes, and Aaron England went on to score 11 of his 13 points in the first half as the Wolverines found themselves leading 30-29 at the break. The lead changed back and forth coming out of the half with neither team able to gain a sizable advantage over the other. That all changed when Jourdain Scoubes drained consecutive three-pointers and scored eight straight Wolverine points to stretch UVU's lead to nine with 2:50 remaining. Scoubes finished with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 from downtown. Houston Baptist would try to close the gap, but UVU prevailed thanks to stellar free throw shooting down the stretch. The Wolverines shot 21-for-25 from the charity stripe, including 6-for-7 in the final minute to secure the victory- Swarbrick hit ail 10 of his free throw attempts.
