Show Wolverine grapplers continue to progress KWESLIE GRAHAM Sports writer After traveling to Nevada, Nebraska and Illinois in the month of December, the UVU wrestling team continues to maintain a high standard of competition. "The season is going great," said coach Greg Williams. "We are still undefeated in duels and the guys are progressing." Over Christmas break five of the team members were invited to compete in the Midlands invitational, unfortunately only four were able to attend due to injury. Ben Kjar, a junior weighing in at 125 pounds, proved to be a tough competitor beating seventh ranked Jared Garnett from Virginia Tech. Kjar placed fifth and is nationally ranked. He has three teammates near that point. Also significantly progressing this season is Flint Ray, a junior weighing 133 pounds. Ray competed in the Las Vegas Invite and had an exciting victory over his competitor, Kevin Smith from the University of Buffalo, who was ranked eleventh in the nation. Coach Williams expects the team to continue to progress throughout the remainder of the season. "We are looking forward to the challenge of wrestling several ranked teams in duels during the next month," said Williams. "These matches are important in getting our individuals ready to win at conference to qualify for the NCAA tournament in March." "We're wrestling the best we can," stated Williams. "In all duels you have an idea if you'll win or not. We're not getting caught up in that." Williams said that the team is prepared for what lies ahead and plans to wrestle to the best of its ability. MAKING HEADLIN Arenas receives indefinite suspension Mangini set to return for 2010 season Washington Wizards standout Gilbert Arenas has been dealt an indefinite suspension by the NBA for his actions in responding to a disagreement with teammate Javaris Crittenton. After a gambling debt caused the disagreement, Arenas and Crittenton allegedly pulled guns on each other in the Wizard's locker room. While Arenas has tried to pass the incident off as a joke, Commissioner David Stern hasn't found the incident at all funny and hastily dished out the suspension to Arenas. After starting the season 1-11 as the new coach of the Cleveland Browns, coach Eric Mangini has been asked to return next season by new team president Mike Holmgren. The Browns finished the season on a four-game winning streak, a streak that may have saved Mangini's job. Along with Mangini, his entire staff has been asked to return for the 2010-11 season. BRIEFS Kjar Named Wrestler of the Week by WWC UVU 125-pound Junior Benjamin Kjar has been named the Western Wrestling Conference's Wrestler of the Week as announced today by the league. At the Midlands, Kjar's wins included a 16-5 major decision over Christopher Quiroga of Purdue and a 4-3 decision over the seventh seed and seventeenth ranked Jason Lara of Oregon State. Other Americans joining Tool- son on the 12-man all-star squad are Brandon Bowman (Georgetown), Lance Williams (DePaul), Josh Shipp (UCLA), Lonny Baxter (Maryland), Terence Kinsey (South Carolina) and Quincy Douby (Rutgers).
