Show culture Uncharted 2: Among Thieves 10.26.2009 Ballads from a thin man Candy Isn't the only corn there is for Halloween One of the only reasons to own a PS3 J0NNYP00LE '~J3 JACK WATERS V j Culture writer RICALEMASTER Culture writer Bob Dylan made a stop on his Never Ending Tour in Utah, and he came equipped with his five decades of influence. How does it feel? Well, his kaleidoscopic songs seemingly have the ability to raise eyebrows or the dead, depending on how/ where/why/when you hear the song. The words leaving his raspy voice are so powerful, they themselves would force their own echo into hiding. His shadow was prominent on the backdrop behind the stage, accentuating his long, thin figure capped with his black cowboy hat. Captivating in his allure, Dylan commanded the stage and crowd as a magician does. Dylan's dense catalogue was on display, as he played songs from his freewheelin1 60s days all the way up to his newest release, 2009's Together Through Life. He began the show with "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" full of spinning beatnik lyrics and then transitioned into his newer material before performing an impressive rendition of the epic "Desolation Row." An energetic version of "Highway 61" revved up the mature crowd. Dylan capped off his pre-intermission set with "Ballad of a Thin Man," It's about that time again where everyone is out shopping for costumes, candy and, most importantly, a good scare. Kendall and Josie Schmidt, the owners of the Crazy Corn Maze in West Jordan, have spent the last 10 years making sure that this time of year can be special for everyone. Along with a few new members of their managing team, they continue to build on their techniques. For their first year of business, Kendall Schmidt spent three entire days plowing the 14 acres of land by hand, but now they have more advanced technology so they are able to increase the quality of the maze. This year's maze design was created by Louisse Hardy and Josie Schmidt, two female entrepreneurs. The design has an elaborate, egyptian theme including a sphinx and pyramids that can only be seen from the sky or on the map of the maze given to you with your . ticket. ;, . "We're trying to make :" it progressively better each year," said Nolin Johnson, one of the managers of the maze. The Schmidt's and their team have vamped up the activities of the maze for everyone to enjoy, especially thrill-seeking college students. Open until Oct. 31, the Culture writer was that enveloping. The three-song encore began with arguably the greatest rock song of all time, "Like a Rolling Stone," followed by this year's "Jolene" and closed the "He's the type of musician that has reinvented himself many times over, allowing his mystique to carry on for so long." concert with "All Along the Watchtower," which followed closely to the version Jimi Hendrix made of the Dylan classic. No other musician or poet has managed to exemplify a time, a place and a generation as completely as Dylan did his. Dylan stood for the hopes and fears of an entire generation of young Americans, and continues to do so to each successive generation. He's the type of musician that has reinvented himself many times over, allowing his mystique to carry on for so long. What Dylan's music is really about is guiding you into a feeling, into an experience. Next time Bob Dylan tours in Utah, make sure to let his weariness amaze you. See CORN •BT left without description - it 'frS • '. • As my eyes began to tear up, due solely to my inability toripmy gaze away from the TV screen as the credits rolled in the seminal gaming experience that is developer Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, two words lingered in my mind like a benediction: Holy. Crap. Often funny, sometimes poignant and always entertaining, the further adventures of Nathan Drake - treasure-hunter and descendant of legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake prove that Naughty Dog has succeeded in crafting one of, if not the most, compelling video game heroes of this console generation. Far from an expert in . the field of ancient fortune recovery, Drake is more enthusiastic than qualified, more scrappy than brave and more stubborn than determined. He's different than the plethora of gruff space marines, femme fatales and expert swordsmen that normally bear the burden of video game protagonists. In a way, he exudes a kind of John McClane Everyman vibe; less a nemesis to his enemies than the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. While thefirstUncharted succeeded in capturing that feeling to a certain extent, it fell flat in a few ways. Namely, playing as Drake never felt like you were controlling someone1 "that could be hurt. •.Uncliarted 2 changes that conception in a big way and classifieds help wanted I misc PT janitorial positions availible in Utah Coupty. As the game begins, Drake comes to consciousness in a train car hanging from a snowcapped cliff. Wounded and left for dead, the first time t'he player controls Drake in this newest quest, he's barely alive, slow-moving and limping. That goes a long way towards dispelling the invincibility myth. "Often funny, sometimes poignant and always entertaining, the further adventures of Nathan Drake treasure-hunter and descendant of legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake" The story, which involves finding Marco Polo's lost fleet and the mythical Tibetan city of Shambhala, is then told through a series of flashbacks as Drake climbs through, and occasionally falls unconscious in, the twisted wreckage of what looks to be a pretty serious accident. Later on in the game you'll find out just how serious and just how •accidental it really was. Aside from a sense of physical vulnerability, Uncharted 2 delivers a powerful sense of emotional vulnerability as well. As the subtitle implies, L)rake finds himself in some pretty shady company during .*; the course of this adven- '•; ture and, unlike in thefirstJ Uncharted, nobody here >j has any compunction aboi^ betraying him should it bfe^ to their advantage. '£§ In a stunning use of ;^ gameplay, this idea perme-! ates the environments Drake traverses and reinforces ; to the player the idea that ; anything can betray you, anything can go wrong. Walls crumble as you climb them, bridges splinter and rot away beneath your feet, ropes snap, pipes bend and nearby explosions throw you to your knees. Instead of being able to plan how to get somewhere, you go through a level wondering how you're going to have to improvise this time. These touches of realism are refreshingly exhilarating. On top of being one of the best-looking games that I've ever seen, Uncliarted 2 also controls, for the most _ part, like a dream. While > Drake did occasionally £ grab a ledge that I simply y intended him to jump by, > the gunplay and platform-:? ing elements are top-notclir; Contributing to the overall-! experience is the exceptiojir al voice-acting. Video gaipfe voice veteran Nolan Nortfp, is superb as Nathan DrakeS and it's a damn shame thajj most games aren't similar!^ acted. fe Loaded with amazing,$ action sequences, quippy'& dialogue and an emotionak, ly, engrossing narrative, Uncharted 2: Among Thievei* is a shoo-in for 2009's garfle of the year and the numbed J 'one"reason to own aTIay^T Station^. * - -• • K Second annual Basin Recreation Held Hou«e"(NewP«rk) Center Oiive.
