SYDNEY FLANIGAN Culture writer The word beauty recalls hard-fought hours at the gym, tons of money spent • at spas and'inconvenient appointments at hair salons. But with these five secrets, you can save time and money by beautifying yourself in the comfort of your own home. 1. Nails: Your hair and nails only grow when you have plenty of nutrients in your body. To make sure your nails stay healthy, long and strong, get the vitamins and minerals that are essential for nail growth. Increase your daily doses of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, folic acid, protein, vitamin B12 and zinc. Once your nails are healthy, make them pretty on the outside. File, paint, and polish as usual, but by keeping your nail polish in 2. Hair: Want to keep your hair looking full and thick without ratting it to destruction? Hair pieces can be the perfect tool. Simply clip them in and in moments you have long, lustrous locks. Another key to perfect hair is making sure that it's shiny. No need to buy expensive shine products when you can give yourself a relaxing shine treatment from home. All you need is an avocado, a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of baking powder. Mash up the avocado and mix the ingredients together to form a smooth paste. Coat your hair in this miracle formula, let it soak for 15 minutes and rinse for shiny, healthy hair. 3. Makeup: Every- one wants thick, curly eyelashes, but sometimes lashes can be difficult to deal with. An eyelash curler is the best tool for opening up your eyes and making them look gorgeous. To get voluptuous lashes, curl them three times: once at the root, once in the middle, and again at the ends. This way, you won't end up with eyelashes that look fake because they're at a distinct 90-degree angle. If you have stubborn, straight lashes, heat your eyelash curler briefly with a blow dryer before you curl them. This adds a curling-iron effect so that they stay curly and attractive all day long. 4. Face: One of the most frustrating things that can get in the way of beauty is acne. Instead of expensive toners and medicines that . dry out your skin, try a nice homemade remedy for pimples. Grate an apple and mix it in to honey until it's a creamy mask. Smooth it over your skin and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse it off with cool water, and flaunt your newly-cleared skin. 5. Fragrance: No matter how much work we put into making ourselves beautiful, it all goes to waste if we don't smell just as pretty. To make sure that your perfume doesn't fade, spray it on your skin just after you get out of the shower. When your skin is damp and the pores are open, it will hold onto the fragrance longer. Don't miss spraying it on your back; this will give others a whiff of your tantalizing scent as you walk by and when you hug them. Never spray perfume on formal clothing, as it can stain the fabric. To intensify your smell, use shampoo, conditioner, lotion and body wash with the same scent. adventures in GUILTY LEMMA HUNT Copy chief Ever wonder what happened to Geena Davis? I'll tell you what happened: Her career died because she's terrible. You don't believe me? Oh, that's right, you're thinking Thelma Ajid Louise. Well, let me set the record straight. I give you Exhibit A: Cutthroat Island. This Razzie-nominated 1995 swashbuckler showcases with unyielding transparency Davis' absolute lack of acting ability. It's also possible she just wasn't even trying. I don't know. What I do know is that this film deserved to win that Razzie. Between it's readymade plot, ludicrous action scenes, inconsistent accents, jejune dialogue, over-the-top explosions and misguided girl-power message. Cut- throat Island became the sort of forgettable pirate movie that was laid quietly to rest in an ignominious grave of low public opinion. It also became one of my childhood favorites. And I still love it for all thereasons that we all loved Pirates Of The Carribean and for the fact that Cutthroat Island did it all about a decade earlier than the multi-gajillion dollar Disney franchise. Sure, there's no Johnny Depp, and the script is lacking (to say the least), but this awful, awful movie is still really fun to watch and so preposterous that it's good for a few laughs at the director's, cast's, writers' and studio's expense. I won't go into Exhibit B: Stuart Little next week; my amusement at failure has its bounds. For those who haven't heard Elizabethan Report, this is your chance. Just so you know what to expect, here is a rough approximation. Influences include The Strokes and Talking Heads, but what does the actual band sound like? Imagine a mix of vocals from The Bravery and Franz Ferdinand combined with Vampire Weekend. Add a pinch of wild stage dancing for good measure. Why care about Elizabethan Report? First of all, they're local - support them. Also, they recently were invited to play at the NAMU festival with bigtime names like Bob Dylan, Gnarls Barkley and The Roots.
