Show culture Farewell, Mode Boutique 8.24.2009 Beethoven program opens 70th season of Utah Symphony ORAINE GHOLDSTON Culture writer The prestegious Utah Symphony invites classical music enthusiasts to celebrate the opening of their new season with an evening of Beethoven on Sept. 11 and 12 at Abravanei Hall in Salt Lake City. The concert will open with Creatures of Prometheus music from the ballet, after which renowned violinist Jennifer Frautschi will take the stage with the orchestra in Beethoven's lyrical Concerto for Violin in D Major. Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, ever-popular and one of the most distinctive of Beethoven's works, will conclude the evening. Ms. Frautschi made her debut in New York in 2004 after being selected by Carnegie Hall, and has soloed with dozens of orchestras in the United States and Wii from9 B1 to a series of seemingly unconnected events. The game starts off with your chosen character parachuting down to the island. As you twist and turn the Wii remote, your character responds in kind, gliding, diving or tumbling through the air. Soon the chute opens and you're free to pick the game of" your choice. Resort offers 12 sports. abroad ever since. A native of Pasedena, CA, Frautschi began playing violin at age three, and went on to study music at the Colburn School for Performing Arts in Los Angeles, Harvard, the New England Conservatory of Music and Juilliard. In her performances, she plays a 1722 Antonio Stradivarius violin known as the "exCadiz" on loan for her by a private American foundation. Conductor Matthias Bamert will be leading the orchestra. He has been described as a "conductor who defies categorization" and has had a very successful career around the world. His beginnings in Cleveland expanded to conducting orchestras abroad, including the Malaysian and London Philharmonic Orchestras, . among dozens of others. He often appears with the BBC Philharmonic and Birming- ham Symphony Orchestra outside of London. In conjunction with the season opening, an elegant celebratory gala, Celebrate Music in the Community, will be held at the Marriott at 75 South West Temple in •downtown Salt Lake City on Friday, September 1 lth at 6:00 pm. All proceeds from this event will be directed toward the Education and Community Outreach programs of the Utah Symphony and the Utah Opera. The tickets are $100 for season subscribers and $125 for everyone else. Tickets for the Beethoven evening at Abravanei Hall are $20-55. They can be purchased by calling (801) 355-ARTS (2787), in person at the Abravanei Hall box office or by visiting www.utahsymphony.org Ticket prices increase $5 the day of performance. Some old, some new, all pretty great. The best thing about the game is that your mileage will undoubtedly vary from mine and you'll probably find yourself going back to different sports than the ones I'll list as my personal favorites. For example, the sports I would cite as standouts are sword fighting, basketball ^archery, table tennis and bowling. The goodnot-great list includes air sports, frisbee, golf and wakeboarding. The throw- aways are cycling, canoeing and power cruising. But much like an allinclusive resort vacation, different people will prefer to do different things. Nintendo really nailed this aspect and it's great to see a game that truly has something for everyone. The controls are tight, the graphics are clean and aesthetically pleasing, if otherwise unimpressive, and the sports are just a fiat-out blast. If you loved Wii Sports, you will want to marry Wii Sports Resort. How will the closure of downtown shops affect local culture? ized shirts. "Though Mode and Coal Umbrella's closings will really squash the retail shopping part of it, downtown is still getting great restaurants left and right. Spark, The Pennyroyal re-opening, Communal and Rooster are all things to be excited about. And the rock to downtown is Velour, and Cory [Velour's owner] is not going anywhere." Richard also points out that, though now closed, Mode succeeded in opening up possibilities for downtown Provo in years to come. "Mode brought-awareness of higher end brands to Provo. It showed customers that higher quality comes at a higher price. It also opened a lot of eyes to the potential of downtown Provo," Richard said. RANDI from • B1 Nickname: RJ stands for Randi Junior.
