Show Real SL back on track UVU • V'-LlrJi^* June 23-July 3 After last win, RSL hopes for winning streak Kvle Jellinas Managing editor Real Salt Lake has been struggling as of late to say the least. However things may be taking a turn for the better. On June 13 RSL beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0. This not only marks RSL's first victory in eight matches, which they dominated in a 6-0 conquest over the New England Revolution, it is also their first and only win on "the road this season. Real Salt Lake received goals from Yura Movsisyan and Nat Borchers. Coach Jason Kreis used a 4-3-3 formation for the second straight match, which seemed to be an excellent decision. RSL started the match aggressively and had two opportunities within the first 10 minutes. This goal could not come at a better time for Movsisyan, who had been lacking confi'dence this season. "That special play happened, and I thought he was absolutely fantastic. I'm looking forward to what he's like over the next couple of weeks." Borchers would have to wait until the 51st minute for his time to shine. Following a corner kick by RSL the ball was deflected off of Galaxy Midfielder Eddie Lewis and Borchers took advantage grounding the ball just inside the far post. This gave RSL a 2-0 lead and that would prove to be Orem Owlz: plenty, as they would win by that same score. Real Salt Lake will be back at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday June 27 when they face Toronto FC and also July 3 as they go up against the San Jose Earthquakes. at Ogden Raptors 7:00 p.m. Thursday & Friday June 25-26. Orem Owlz: at Ogden Raptors 7:00 p.m Orem boys of summer Kvle Jellinas Managing editor One thing many people at Utah Valley University may not know is that there is a minor league baseball team that plays right at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Orem Owlz are the minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and plays right here in Orem. Last season the Owlz posted a .693 win percentage with a 52-23 record, which was first in the Pioneer South League. The Owlz would finish the season, however, losing in the Pioneer League championship to the Great Falls Voyagers. Outfielder/first basemen Roberto Lopez was named the pioneer league most valuable player. He led the team in almost all hitting categories. Posting a .400 batting average, 108 hits, and'72 runs batted in. Right behind Lopez is third basemen Luis Jimenez. Jimenez had more at bats than anyone with 284; he posted a .331 average and led the team with 15 home runs. Jayson Miller was the team's ace. Miller had an 8-2 overall record in 15 starts and held a pioneer Saturday, June 27 RSL: league leading 2.'33 earned run average. It is tough to say that the Owlz will have another great season. With the minor league the team is constantly changing but the Owlz have won three of the last four pioneer league championship so it will be interesting to see what happens. With the clock run 7 seconds flat, Jake picked up a devastating 10-second penalty when his horse broke out at the gate. Ending his run in preliminary competition, Jake is averaging a score of 21.8. In steer wrestlin g, the Wolverine team highlight performance came from Baylor Roche, a UVU lineman technology major from Tremonton, Utah. Roche landed a 5.8 clean ride, dismount and steer drop. On a horse named Bad Medicine, Taylor White lifted team scores with a 70.5 in Saddle bronc. A senior majoring in accounting, White has become known at the Casper Events Center as the "Family Man" for his "2.5 children and wife that keeps him smiling," said the announcer. Bareback turned up equally as successful for Colton Bair of Fielding, Utah. Riding the bronc, Dunnit Again, Bair completed his run with a shining score of 69.5. Tuesday June 16 offered a dusty disappointment for former champion roper Tori Thacker. The UVU secondary education major missed in her calf in two preliminary events and at Tuesday evening's first competition run in Breakaway Roping. Thacker may be leaving Nationals with a no-score, but her resolve and attempt were both solid and graceful.
