These programs still continue today as part of the UVU study aboard experience. They have also identified 15 textbooks that could be put on the book buy back program./ They are continuing to work with the faculty and administration in this process. Our Senate and Independent branches also discussed the issues of a Performing Arts building and an expansion of our Science Building in Washington D.C. with Senator Bob Bennett. MILITARY IN IRAQ SPEECH • The 10th annual conference by the Faculty Fellow in Ethics Keynote Address is slated for Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Ragan Theater. Dr. Laura Hamblin, Faculty Fellow in Ethics for 2007-2008 will be speaking on, "Has the U.S. Military Solution in Iraq Been A Success? A View from the Perspective of Iraqi Refugee Women and Children in Amman." UPHORIC ABOUT... Continuing the close ties enjoyed by UVUSA and the UVU faculty to strengthen diversity of thought, opinion, and activity throughout the campus. I, Joseph Watkins worked with Commissioner Sederburg over the summer months to lower this multiplier and was successful in his efforts. Though out of state students will still pay a larger tuition cost than those of in state students, the reduction of the multiplier is a positive step in attracting diverse students to our University. Each elected member sits on a multitude of committees representing the interests of the students. Each Senator also sits on a multitude of the committees. Additionally, our Student Senate has been conducting "Student Forums" held in the hallways to gather feedback from students as to what they would like to communicate to the administration. A WORLD CLASS DIVISION 1 ATHLETICS PROGRAM Pursuit of NCAA Division 1 Status Working with athletics in their efforts to secure a permanent Division 1 status. Through last year and this year's efforts, we are now part of the "Great West" division of the NCAA. This distinction came as a result of strong standards adhered to on part of the students and a strong student support for all our athletics programs. This year UVUSA drove an enormous campaign to register students to vote. Through a coordinated effort we were successful in assisting over 3300 students in this process. Additionally, UVUSA housed the "Early Voting" machines for the city of Orem in our office, 4,377 people from throughout the community utilized these machines to cast their vote. in Focus on inclusive activities that are catered to our diverse environment UVUSA has made an effort to include members from all backgrounds in our activities. We have built the largest Facebook group on campus and have well over 300 committee members and department representatives. Working with state and local legislature for raising Advertisement U.S. AIRWAYS PAYS PASSENGER FOR CRASH LANDING ACCIDENT • U.S. Airways has announced that it will award $5,000 to each passenger aboard the jet that dramatically splashed down in the Hudson River on Jan. 15. In addition to this announcement, airline officials have also issued ticket refunds for the 150 passengers who were aboard the jet, along with a letter explaining they are there to assist the passengers with their immediate needs. The airline carrier also explained to passengers that it could take months to return their personal effects from the damaged aircraft and warned that some items may not be salvaged. Additionally, the airline plans to dry out all of the items and weigh them as part of the investigation into the crash. DOCTORS SEPARATE OKLAHOMA CONJOINED TWINS • A pair of conjoined twins was separated by surgeons at Oklahoma University Medical Center on Jan. 20 at 12:14 p.m. The twin girls, Preslee Faith Wells and Kylee Hope Wells, were born conjoined at the chest on Oct. 25. The procedure involved splitting the girls' liver and the connecting tissue that conjoined them to each other. Doctors have said that the girls have a good chance of survival due to the fact that they have separate hearts and do not share any major blood vessels.
