Hauenstein went through three weeks of chemo and the doctors went on to perform a bone-marrow transplant. His recovery was going well until July when he was stricken with pneumonia, which landed him in the hospital. He fought through two bouts with the sickness and is still in the process of fighting his way back after doctors gave him a 10 percent chance of survival. As Hauenstein's battle continues, the annual Guns and Hoses hockey game has offered to make a donation to Hauenstein and his family. The Guns and Hoses game pits a team made up of police officers against a team of firefighters. "This is going to be such a fun event to come watch," said former UVU hockey coach and game participant Matt Beaudry. " Cops vs. fireman have been practicing for several months now and as the game gets closer the practices have gotten more spirited." The event will take place this Saturday, January 24th and will be held at the ECenter in West Valley City. Help support a former Wolverine by attending the event and also witnessing a spectacle on the ice. The festivities kick off at 1 p.m. with an apparatus display from the Utah fire and police departments. The game starts at 2 p.m. with tickets starting as low as $10. The day ends as the Utah Grizzlies take on the Idaho Steelheads at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Campus Connection. UVU track has record setting day KYLE JELLINGS Asst. Sports editor Utah Valley's track team set several records at the BYU Collegiate Indoor Invitational to kick off the indoor track season. Dave Iba/ UVU Review In the opening meet of the 2009 season the UVU men's and women's Track and Field teams ran their way into the record books competing at the BYU Collegiate Indoor Invitational. At the invitational the Wolverines broke four school records and gained a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season. "We could not have asked for any more out of our opening meet of the season," UVU track associate head coach Kirke Adamson said. "Everybody came through and met a lot of their personal goals for today's meet. Our performances today are setting us up in a great spot for the remainder of the season especially in our inaugural year in the Great West Conference." On the men's side freshman Michael McPherson broke the school's heptathlon record with 3,891 points and junior Andrew Graham broke the record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31. The women's team also broke two records. Junior Jessica Wortley broke the school record in the women's 300-meter dash with a time of 41.40, and junior Tiera Zaugg shattered the school record in the women's pentathlon. 'it is just great to break four school records in the opening meet of the season," Adamson said, ' i t is especially great to see Jessica (Wortley) beat Manama Salifu's previous record as Salifu is a member of the Ghana National Team's 4xl00-meter relay." The next meet for the running Wolverines will be at the Blue and Orange Classic in Boise Idaho. Jan. 24. UVU wrestlers muscle their way to top spots The wrestling team crowned two champions and two others that ended up in second place during the wrestling meet that was held here at the school. All four of the Wolverine's varsity wrestlers made it to the finals for their weight class at the second annual UVU Open. DAVE IBA Photo editor Sophomore Casen Eldredge won the 184-pound tournament while freshman Adam Fager won the 197-pound tournament, Utah Valley welcomed athletes from such schools as Iowa State, Oklahoma, Boise State, Wyoming, Cal State Bakersfield, Western Wyoming, Northwest Wyoming, Western State, Grand Canyon, and Menlo College to name a few. "We were very pleased with ouroverall performance today," UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams said. "We had a good turnout and also very good competition here today as well. It was a full day of wrestling and our varsity team is definitely progressing very nicely this season." A little short-handed, the Wolverines had only four varsity wrestlers that competed at the event, some tending some small injuries. One of UVU's stars, newly married Ben ,Kjar, reportedly missed the meet due to a honeymoon. Congratulations, Ben. Utah Valley sophomore Justin Morrill(149-lbs.) fell in the championship about 4-3 in a very tight contest to Jared Hately, unattached. With the loss, Morrill placed second at the open. Also falling in the finals and finishing in second place was freshman Brad Darrington as he lost 14-5 to Victor Carazo. The 3-2 Wolverines will be back in action on January 24 at the Tracy Borah Duals in Gunnison, Colo. Sports Briefs UVU announces hitting and pitching camp Utah Valley University Baseball, under the direction of head coach Eric Madsen, has announced hitting and pitching camps for Jan. 20 thru Feb. 12 at Brent Brown Ballpark In Orem. The Progressive Hitting Camp will take place over a four-week period with campers participating in a one-hour hitting session, one time per week on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening. The hitting camp is limited to the first 40 campers. The Progressive Pitching Camp will be held on Wednesday evenings with campers participating in three, one-hour sessions and two, 1/2 hour bullpen sessions. Fairbanks Earns Third Great West Player of the Week Award For the third time this season, Robyn Fairbanks has been named the Great West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. She led Utah Valley to a 2-1 record while averaging 28.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. The senior started out the week with 34 points in just 22 minutes after suffering early foul trouble at Portland State. Fairbanks scored 30 in the second half and overtime to secure the 102-92 win for the Wolverines. The center collected 18 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort at Portland, then ended the solid week with 33 points and eight rebounds in a win over Utah State. She extended her doublefigure scoring streak to 66 games and now has 39 doubledoubles in her career. For the season, Fairbanks is second in the country in scoring {24.5 points) while shooting an average of 58.2 percent from the field and averaging 10.1 rebounds per game. Earlier this season, Fairbanks became the first player to reach 2,000 career points at Utah Valley and is currently 113 rebounds short of becoming the first player to surpass 1,000 for her career. . Santana doubtful for World Baseball Classic Dave Iba/ UVU Review Brad Darrington and the rest of the Utah Valley wrestling team had a strong showing at the UVU Open. Johan Santana, the New York Mets pitcher and twotime winner of the Cy Young Award, is unsure whether he will be able to pitch for his native Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic this spring. Santana underwent off-season knee surgery and the Mets have yet to clear him for the WBC. In the inaugural WBC in 2006, Santana pitched for Venezuela as they were eliminated in the second round. |
