Show Life M O V I E Monday • October 27, 2008 D 3 \ The heroine, the scientist, and the transvestite R E V I E W S Max Payne Rocky Horror Picture Show screened by cinema studies club LiiMELSUNDQUIST Life editor To complement the new Cinema Studies minor in the English department, students have created a new club. Thus far, the cinema studies club has sponsored two cult-film screenings, Evil Dead 2 and Dr. Strangelove. This Thursday, the club, along with the Gay-Straight Alliance, will show the classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show in LA 023. The screening is free and open to the public. Dressing up as a character from the film is strongly encouraged by the club. "People can dress up as whatever they'd like, but the tradition is to dress up as characters from the film,... or at least in some sort of cross-dressing outfit," said Tyler Barnum, president of the Cinema Studies club. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is rated R, is a celebrated kitschy salute to both horror movies and sexual liberation. You'll recognize Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, as well as Meat Loaf (yes, that Meat Loaf) in a cameo. The Gay-Straight Alliance is co-sponsoring the event, giving it their unofficial "stamp of approval,1' according to Rob Steffen, vice president of the club. Earlier this year, the cin- 20th Century Fox Mark Wahlberg plays the title character in Max Payne, a movie based on the 2001 video game. PayneM in every way HICKMAN Life writer Where did Marky Mark go wrong? His performance in The Departed was perfect. After that, you think he'd have a ton of great roles. Instead he's doing stinkers like Shooter, The Happening and now the video-game-based Max Payne. Max Pavne is about a detective hunting down and killing the men responsible for killing his wife and child. Shortly after we enter in, Payne stumbles across new supernatural evidence. It is then that the movie tries too hard to be like a mix of Sin City and Constantine. Max Payne never pulls it off. Although Max Payne is PG-13, it tries playing it off like a gritty Rrated flick. The main problem is that the story goes nowhere. It is a boring mess. I've never played it, but if the video game is this boring, then I can't imagine anybody ever playing it. Who is going to like this movie? Teenage video game playing boys whose parents never let them watch good action flicks. Other than that small audience, there's no one else who will see Max Payne and be glad they paid eight bucks to see it. The new cinema studies club and the Gay Straight Alliance are teaming up to screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show this week. ema studies minor sponsored the Reel Film Screenings, which focused on international film. The last of these screenings was in April, and now the cinema studies club is superseding the function of the Reel Film Screenings. "I originally wanted to show it at UVU because as far as I know it has never been shown here, and is only shown at the Tower Theater in Salt Lake, so we needed a second showing at the next major population hub in Utah," Barnum said of Rocky Horror. A Victorian secret Covey Theater plays Turn of the Screw this Halloween Season BRANDON SCHEMBRI Life writer Rachel Baird plays the governess in the Covey Center's production of the psychological thriller Turn Of The Screw, which is based on a Henry James novel. The Turn Of The Screw is a tale of ghosts. Or is it? For those familiar with the Henry James novella from which the play was adapted, you might recall the psychological nature of the work. Screw is praised as a work that has the ability to create fear and horror without detailing gore. Today the horror genre is not complete without gallons of blood splashing on the walls and gushing out of slit throats. Turn Of The Screw contains none of these. The action takes place when a new governess (Rachael Baird) arrives to take on a nanny position in the Blythe estate. The magistrate (Benjamin King, who also plays the maid and Miles) agrees to her new position, but on one condition: that she never contact him under any circumstances. Little explanation is provided. It is also revealed that the children are not his, leaving more questions for the new governess. Anxious to be with the children, she readily agrees — secretly hoping that a pleas- ing performance will ensure matrimony with . the handsome young bachelor. Upon arrival she meets a maid who knows all the secrets of Blythe, but is stringent in revealing them, and also encounters the children, Laura and Miles, the latter having recently been expelled from school, again for reasons unknown. From here the unanswered questions envelope a greater mystery behind the Blythe estate. We discover that the previous governess committed suicide. The events, at Blythe take a dramatic turn when Baird claims to see the deceased. The script is unique in that it captures the rich, eloquent language and landscape of Henry James. Yet the stage itself is rather plain. All it consists of is a chair, four shower curtains attached to metal poles surrounding center stage, a hand-held light, and three masks. But its sparcity is its strength because of its ability to convey epic quality as set forth by James.
