Show B4 MONDAY, MARCH 10, 2008 S A N S Life • THE COLLEGE TIMES New indie bound for success S O C K S If we can t trust the fashion industry... Brandon Schelin Life writer I n Linsell, Sweden, circa 1950s, Gosta Olofsson, a village gas station and shop manager, creates home made souvenirs that turn out to be quite popular with both the locals and tourists. One piece, in particular, is his signature Linsell scarf. The scarf depicts the picturesque village in a bright, you might say fauvistesque, fashion. The scarf displays the county's coat of arms, a notable bridge, and a sketch of the village's church as seen from the Olofsson garden. Fast forward to New York, 2008, where in Marc Jacobs' recent collection we see a scarf surprisingly similar to Olofsson's 1950s version. At first when reading the story in The Local Sweden's English newspaper - 1 thought that perhaps this was a case of inspiration taken too far. Perhaps Jacobs or one of his designers had seen the scarf .and used it as a style guide for the creation of a "mountain bandanna" of their own. These thoughts were quelled, however, when juxtaposed photos of the two scarves emerged on the web. The colors are identical - or would be, had Olofsson had the printing capabilities of Jacobs;'the images are identical — the bear, the bridge, the sheep, the villages coat of arms, right down to the angle of the church. The one change Jacobs did feel it necessary to make - changing Linsell, Sweden to Marc Jacobs, Since 1984 - was even done in a handwritten lettering very similar to that of the original. Olofsson passed away in 1982, and therefore was unable to catch this act of plagiarism himself. However, his 55-year-old son, Goran Olofsson, was able to catch Jacobs in the act. *i was very surprised when I saw the new scarf." Olofsson told The Local. "It looks like a clear case of plagiarism." Being the humble Swede he is, Olofsson wished only to gain clarification as to whether Jacobs had somehow acquired the rights to the design, or if he - his father's only heir - was indeed the owner of the design. As of March 4, Olofsson had finally received word back from Jacobs in the form of an undisclosed cash amount. The Marc Jacobs fashion house will continue to sell their "mountain bandannas," but will now do so legally. However, what is this story really telling us? Can we no longer trust the fashion industry, the rock that our society is delicately balanced upon? And, if not, who can we trust? Who will we discover is lying to us next - Fortune 500 companies or, gasp, politicians? Get by with a little help from Charlie Bartlett Luke Hickman Life editor Every once in a while, a small film will come out that nobody knows. Not many people will see it, but those who do will enjoy it immensely. And later on, it will go places. People will finally hear buzz about it and ask, "When did that come out?" and "Why haven't I heard about it?" Case in point: Little Miss Sunshine. Few saw it in theaters, and then it went on to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor Oscars. Little Miss Sunshine's profit was enormous - except in Utah. You must put forth your own effort to seek out little treasures like that. And Charlie Bartlett is easily one of those films. Brilliant 18-year-old actor Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog) plays Charlie Bartlett, a rich kid who's been expelled from every prep school. His fate now lies in the cold, cruel hands of the public school system. Because all Charlie knows is prep school life, his lack of style and social skills causes his classmates to leave him in the dust with the short-bus kids. Charlie Bartlett is all about a great kid who's just trying to fit in with a bunch of other kids who are trying to do the same - only they don't know it. He does anything and everything he can to accomplish this - from studying psychology and giving personal, private therapy sessions, to studying pharmaceuticals and giving prescriptions accordingly. It doesn't take long for his entire class to latch onto his unique personality as he does everything he can to try to make everyone fit in, feel normal and realize that everything is going to be all right. Of course, along the way Charlie meets obstacles that hinder his social homeostasis: a bully, a geek, a love interest daughter-of-a-principal (Robert Downey Jr.) who's hot on his case, etc. But these are nothing he can't handle and help make right. Charlie Bartlett is an unforgettable film. It carries a charm that you'll carry with you a while after seeing it. There's something about intelligent, upbeat, well-written and well-made movies that, you just don't forget. And just like this movie, young Yelchin is going places too. Although you might only recognize Yelchin as the kidnapped teen from Alpha Dog, he got his big break as the lead role in a film that David Duchovney wrote and directed, House ofD (another little treasure film). And next year, you'll see him play the. young version of the legendary Russian Commander Pavel Chekov in J.J. Abrams' big screen reboot of the original Star Trek series. If you're looking for great, new, fresh and original entertainment, then steer clear of the typical Hollywood flick this week and see if Charlie Bartlett can't give you a hand. is a line between a joke that will get you a good laugh, and a comment that will get you shot. Become acquainted with that line, and never cross it in public. 6. If you must find a way to vent all of your offensive remarks, and know that if you do so in public you might be punched, use characters in television or movies as target practice while you're alone. Nothing is more entertaining and relaxing than yelling at the swooning heartthrob or shy outsider of a soap opera. 7. Do it anonymously. The Internet is a wonderful place where anyone can say anything they want, and it can remain generally anonymous. Start a blog like The Superficial or ONTD, and let loose all of your politically incorrect witticisms. 8. Remember that you1 ve got to be willing to take the punishment. If you offend someone who has some sort of leeway over you (a professor, coach, bus driver, or bartender), you'll probably have to deal with the consequences (a bad grade, a season on the bench, walking home for a month, or weeks of stale drinks). HOW TO from B3 fun of blondes while with brunettes. If you poke fun at someone that your audience isn't fond of, they are more likely to agree with you. 5. Learn your boundaries. The most important thing about learning to be politically incorrect is to know when to stop. There Wisdom Teeth Need your wisdom teeth removed?
