Show I A8 Life MONDAY, MARCH 3, 2008 - THE COLLEGE TIMES 3 Same rock blend in a new color Smash it up Former Taking Back Sunday guitarist goes solo Jonny Poole Life writer If you happened to overhear someone mention the Holy Trinity, you could assume that they were referring to the Christian Godhead comprised of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. However, if this person were a rabid Nintendo fanboy, the term Holy Trinity could just as easily signify three of the most critically acclaimed and lucrative video game franchises of all time, namely Mario, Zelda and Metroid. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of the most hotly anticipated video games of 2008 is a continuation of the Super Smash Bros series. For the uninitiated, Smash Bros pits famous Nintendo characters against each other in a no-holds-barred battle royale. The action is fast, the competition furious, and, due to the abundance of game-modifying powerups, the results are usually in doubt up until the moment that the loser is blasted off the screen. However, as fast and fun as the game plays, the real appeal of Smash Bros hearkens back to the days of good-natured - yet intense - schoolyard discussions. Who would win in a fight: Superman or Wolverine? Bourne or Bond? Mario or Sonic? By taking some of video games' most beloved characters and allowing us to settle the argument once and for all (or at least until the next match), the creators of Smash Bros return us to our childhood. The result is video game nostalgia and nirvana. The newest entry in the series, Super Smash Bros Brawl, will be released Sunday, March 9, at 12 a.m. In order to roll out the red carpet for what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest releases of 2008, Life writer Fred Mascherino has turned his long-time side project from his days in Breaking Pangea dn Taking Back Sunday into his full-time gig. The Color Fred, aptly named for the rock star, isn't your ordinary solo project and Fred called up The College Times to tell us all the details about his new band, the band's new CD and his current tour with Angels and Airwaves. Chad Hunt the GameStop in the Provo Towne Centre mall, as well as local GameCrazys in Orem, Spanish Fork and American Fork, will be hosting tournaments and staying open until midnight to put the game on sale for die hard fans. At GameStop, Smash Bros fans must have a copy of the new game preordered to compete in the tournament. GameCrazy has no such requirement. However, the game used in their tournament will be Super Smash Bros Melee, a previous entry in the series. The GameStop tournament will feature the new title, Super Smash Bros Brawl. The tournaments at all four locations will start on Saturday, March 8, at 8:00 p.m. Employees from both GameStop and GameCrazy are expecting crowds in the hundreds as aJl of theses locations have individually sold over 300 pre-orders. To put that into perspective, Halo 3, which holds the record for the biggest launch in entertainment history, also sold just over 300 pre-orders at these locations. Winners of the tournaments will be awarded with prizes ranging from gift cards to free video game swag and, of course, bragging rights. Both GameStop and GameCrazy are also encouraging tournament competitors to dress up as their favorite characters. As the senior game advisor at the Provo Towne Centre GameStop location, Brian Tipton is very excited for the Super Smash Bros Brawl launch. "Smash Bros ... in general is fun," Mr. Tipton said. "People love the Nintendo characters. Whether they want to admit it or not, they love the characters." imathathome.com f Your Motivation Is Your Success!
