Show life A6 MONDAY • AUGUST 13 • 2007 revival of The Rentals Weekly backhand The '90s alternative rockers hit the road with Copeland and Goldenboy Luke Hickman Ufe editor Starting this week, the Life section is going to run a new. series giving a verbal backhand to whatever "celebrity" did what we consider to be the "most stupid thing" of that week. This week, our backhand extends to Chris Thile, the mandolin player from the bluegrass/ folk group Nickel Creek. Nickel Creek is currently in the middle of their "Farewell (For Now) Tour" with "special guest" Fiona Apple. What does the "special guest" title entail? Opening? No. Headlining? No. It means that throughout the night, Fiona Apple will come out and sing her music with Nickel Creek as her b'and. On the first night of the tour, Aug. 2, in Baltimore, Maryland, Chris Thile opened the show asking the crowd how their home baseball team the Orioles were doing. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows they're sucking it up. Oh well, Thile. We can forgive you for that. But that's not what we're backhanding you for. After a few songs, the puzzled audience of Fionafans began scratching their heads, sporadically asking out loud," "Where's Fiona?" Every time, Thile would try to calm the restless crowd, asking everyone to be patient, saying that it was their tour and not hers. It was obvious that this was more of a Fiona audience than a bluegrass, hick-loving one. Later that evening, the band invited Fiona out to play her hit song "Criminal," only instead of the solid piano driven rendition on her album, Nickel Creek applied a bluegrass flavor that actually wasn't too bad. Upon finishing the song, Thile told Fiona and the crowd that this version added some light to a lyrically dark song, and that if you paid attention to the music you'd be uplifted, but depressed if you paid attention the words. Then Thile made the remarks that earned him a backhand by saying that if Fiona had written upbeat music to those lyrics, much like Nickel Creek had just done, she'd be successful and her albums would actually sell instead of being obscure. Smack you, Chris Thile! How dare you say such things to our dearest Fiona? Her fans may be obscure, but at least they have teeth and can read. You titled this tour with your "special guest" the "Farewell (For Now) Tour," and if you keep up with remarks like that, it may be over before you know it. Chad Hunt Assistant Ufe editor A newly revived and revamped lineup for Matt Sharp's The Rentals blew through Salt Lake City Wednesday, Aug. 8, on the first part of their current national tour with Copeland and Gol,denboy. Putting on a somewhat intimate show at In The Venue, the former bassist for Weezer's project is making a comeback. The Rentals are touring in support of their first release in over eight years, The Last Little Life Ep, which is due out Aug. 14. Doors at the venue opened at 7 p.m., but the line to get in was less than impres- Matt Sharp, The Rentals sive. With not much waiting time for entrance, and not too many people gathering for the show, it seemed that the show may be over before it really began. Then Goldenboy took the stage. Driven by Shon Sullivan's deep, soothing vocals, listening to Goldenboy perform their set, comprised primarily of songs from their release Underneath The Radio, was like taking a nice relaxing drive on an open highway at sunset. Most of the tunes were melodic, low tempo and easy on the ears. Their performance was pleasantly inspiring. Even perhaps more inspirational was the crucial middle set performed by Chad Hunt/College Times Interview with Copeland's Aaron Marsh to play some new material. CH: What has been the biggest change switching over to Columbia Records from The Militia Group? How has the switch affected your fan base? What kind of effect has it had on Copeland as a band? AM: Columbia hasn't done anything. The only change has been the fact that we have no media presence now, I don't know why. Maybe our time hasn't come yet? CH: When should fans lookforwardtoanewrelease? AM: Yeah, we'd love to do another record. We have a couple promising little tunes in the oven. Right now we' re at the mercy of label politics for our future plans. For now, we'll just write some songs and whenever we get the chance to record, we'll do it. CH: What other projects are members in the band currently involved in? AM: I have a studio in my home and I produce when we're off tour. I've been working on a project called Anchor & Braille for a while, and I have a few more projects lined up as well when I get home from this tour. Bryan [Laurenson] is a real good mix engineer, so he does that whenever he has the chance. CH: What's the next big step for the band? AM: Getting through this tour. It's a long one. Two months. That's a long time to be away from home. ; • r (between Nordstrom and The Gap) classifieds Cost? Free to public More info?
