This year marks the "lucky" thirteenth anniversary for the tour which, ironically, came to Salt Lake City on Jul. 7, the day referred to by the superstitious as the "lucky sevens." This year, the luck of the two numbers must have been with the tour, because it was fantastic. Starting at 11 o'clock and not ending until later in the evening, everyone flooding the fairgrounds came prepared for a long, hot day of music, sun and free stuff. A writer for The College Times, Chad Hunt was one of those in attendance. Since the tour is too large to report on the entire event, he has chronicled his Warped Tour 2007 experience to share. Though not having extensive experience with the tour, I am not new to the Warped Tour experience either. In 2004, a number of excellent bands came with the tour to Utah, but the experience that year as a whole was severely bogged down by antiBush speeches that kept the actual music to a minimum. 2005, though stacked with excellent performers, lacked in quality performances. It seemed everyone was either plowed or half asleep when taking the stage. This year was different. Even though a lot of the bands I caught on the tour this year had come either in '04 or '05, the actual performances of those bands I saw were much more up to par than those of the previous two tours I had been to. For starters, Yel lowcard came in 2004, and though they put on an excellent show then, they killed the excitement of the performance with political banter. But they did get an excellent circle pit going. This year Yeflowcard cut the political fat out of their performance and got down to the essentials: playing their music. They had a larger grab bag of songs to pull from, and the circle pit was superior to that of three years ago. The Starting Line came around this year, primarily in support of their new album Direction, which hits shelves Jul. 31. But their performance was light years better than two years ago when they came, again, in support of a new album. Based On A Trite Story. That performance was terrible. Riddled with bad timing and Kenny Vassoli not only singing bad but dancing bad as well, I didn't expect much from the Starting Line this year. But I was pleasantly surprised as Vassoli and crew pulled off a magnificent showing of songs See WARPED TOUR-A7 Eye on entertainment Independence Day in our How the rating system affects the movies we watch Luke Hkkman Life editor Anyone who understands business knows that in order to be lucrative, your product has to appeal to the highest amount of people possible. Sometimes, that means tweaking your product. And Hollywood is finally starting to realize. Since its birth, the R rating has proved to be a two-edged sword for the movie industry. The freedom to be artistic and extreme that? R-rated movies have causes them to gross less money than G, PG and PG-13s. So why does Hollywood keep producing them? An R rating means you can be racy (some mistake this for artsy) and vulgar, curse, and show nudity and extreme violence. This is the appeal to many nowadays. Except, now many theater chains are starting to enforce the 17-year-old age limit, prohibiting the teenage audience from adding to the boxoffice bucks. They're not making the money that less severely rated movies are. Is it worth it to lose money so you can show nudity or have excessive adult dialogue? With this summer's new trend, Hollywood is saying No, it's not worth it. The 2007 summer lineup has given three examples of how Hollywood is changing. One, Fantastic 4: The Rise of the Silver Surfer. The first movie was rated PG-13 and appealed to the MTVviewing, teenage audience. The new sequel earned a PG, reclaiming the fans of the first movie and inviting a new audience: children and families. A bigger au- dience equals more money. Two, Evan Almighty. Bruce Almighty was PG13 and appealed to the adults, young adults and some teenagers. Evan received a PG rating, the Continued on • A7 SUMMER Ratings 1408PG-13 Evan Almighty PG Live Free or Die Hard PG-13 nation's capital carnival, the kind without the ferris wheels.
