Show B5 WWW.NETXNEitfS.NET MONDAY • APRIL 16 • 2007 BEN WEBSTER Sports Editor Sorry, sorry streetball Out of all the events happening on campus last Tuesday night, I hope you weren't as unfortunate as I was in the event you picked to attend. There was a baseball double-header against Southern Utah, a mentalist who performed, and Ya Ya Entertainment rolled into town with a Streetball All Stars tour. Out of those, I went to the streetball (not completely by choice) in the McKay Center. Lame. Luckily, I didn't have to pay the 15 to 20 dollars most people paid-it was nowhere near worth it. It could have been made into something to enjoy, but instead it was dreadful. It was meant to be entertainment, but there was very little that was entertaining. Up one game, down the next Wolverines take series against SUU despite inconsistencies Jason Adkins Sports Writer The bats are swinging well in one game, they go flat in another and in the last game of a three-game series against Southern Utah, the Wolverines used the arm of Marcus Moore to carry them to victory. Moore struck out a schoolrecord 14 Thunderbird batters en route to a 4-2 win in the rubber-match of the series on Apr. 11 to cap off the series. Game 1: UVSC beats Southern Utah 15-6 in seven innings The Wolverines smacked 20 hits in the game. Openshaw went 4-for-4 from, the plate in the first game, driving in two runs to spark the Wolverine's offense. Scott Croshaw and Slesk each hit 3-for-4, with four RBIs apiece. All three hit blasted home runs, with Openshaw getting his first dinger of the year. Bryan Smith pitched five innings, allowing six earned runs, but keeping the score in check. UVSC scored five in the fourth inning and six in the fifth to break the game-wide open after they had an early 2-0 lead. Eli Slesk hit a three-run home run in the fourth to finish the rally. Adam Openshaw hit a tworun homer in the fifth and three straight doubles by Wolverines baiters scored three other runs. Southern Utah rallied in the sixth, scoring four runs, narrowing the gap to seven runs. UVSC got back two of those runs in the bottom of the inning. Game 2: UVSC loses focus in 16-6 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader Unfortunately, inconsistency hurt the Wolverines yet again, including Openshaw who went O-for-4. The meat of the lineup, Brinkerhoff and Thomas combined to go 2-for-7. "I wish I had all the answers,"UVSC Head Coach Steve Gardner said. "Sometimes it just boils down to some guys not staying focused from one game to the next." UVSC started out quickly out of the gate, scoring two runs in the first inning. Slesk's RBI single brought home Tyler Garretson. Derrick Thomas's sacrifice fly scored another run. Dick Bargewell ran home on a wild pitch in the second to give the Wolverines a three-run lead. Southern Utah scored four in the fourth to take the lead and didn't look back. They added three runs in both thefifthand sixth innings to break the game open at 11-3. "But the team worked hard, and improved immensely during our season—enough to earn first place in the Rocky Mountain region and qualify for nationals." |
