Show life MONDAY • FEBRUARY 26 • 2007 B3 Movie review Resturaunt review Shoots! 23 is the new 666 In the Mood for Food? Pamela York Life Writer Moist strips of chicken smothered in light tangy sauce are piled high on sticky rice. The kitchen hisses as fresh vegetables are tossed onto a large grill and chocolate dipped fortune cookies grace your table. Well, Shoots! What's that? That's the name of an amazing Chinese restaurant that Utah Valley is lucky enough to claim. This restaurant has successfully created a beautiful atmosphere for its customers while, at the same time, not digging deeply into their pockets. Simply put, Shoots! is the best Chinese food one can find around here. It's not just the food that makes the experience at Shoots memorable; the atmosphere is just as delectable with simple but soothing designs. Black and deep reds are the theme colors of the dining area, with accents of bamboo placed on every table. Instrumental music softly plays in the background, making it easy to focus on your date's conversation. Then there's the service: Never before was one treated with such dignity for less than 10 dollars a plate. The glass was never empty, and the waiter was there the instant he was needed. Shoots employees read their customers' expressions and actions rather than coming and interrupting before you are ready. They take time with you; and if you don't know what to get, they ask '*What tastes do you like?" You can be sure they will always impress, you with the delicious meal they bring out. The food is incredible. A recent customer of Shoots! said: "It was delicious. I never got tired of the taste; every bite was like tasting it for the first time. Not only does it taste good, but the portions are just right. You come out feeling satisfied and happy, rather than bogged down and fat.*1 That happy customer ordered the Cashew Chicken. All in all. Shoots! is the perfect place for a date if you are looking for fun, class and plates that only cost $8 to $12. But, if you are in the mood for a big dinner, there is a "Special Dinner" for only $15.95. It gives you piles of delicious trays, some still sizzling from the grill. And just so customers know how important they are to the Shoots! chefs, during the month of your birthday, you are given a free meal. This isn't just cake or ice cream, but a full meal of $10 or less. (Print off birthday coupon from the Web site below.) Shoots! is fabulous and you won't be able to resist its charm. You'll definitely want to come back for more! Shoots! is located at 4801 N. University Ave. #820, in Provo. CARRIAGE COVE Call for info... 374-2700 Jim Carrey stars in psychologically numb thriller Luke Hickman Life Editor Have you ever seen a guy that thinks he's done the coolest thing ever? Like a friend that tells the same story over and over again, or maybe some dude who does the talk show circuits by showing off his one clever trick over and over again. Don't you hate that guy? Meet Joel Schumacher. This guy's got a series of crappy flicks under his cheap belt, from Batman and Robin to Phonebooth and Phantom of the Opera. Schumacher is good at mining anything with potential. His latest film is just another sad example at how he can become that hated friend. Enter The Number 23. How original and fresh is this bastardized premise: A guy reads a book explaining the unexplainable power of the number 23. He learns that 23 is an evil number that connects every dark occurrence in this world. For example, Waco, Texas and the Oklahoma City bombing both happened on April 19 (4+19=23). Every address, license plate, phone number and date of significance in the movie adds up to 23. The narrative begins on Feb. 3, then flashes back to Dec. 23. The book costs S23. The numbers of the address to the bookshop add up to 23. And it keeps going on and on for 90-something minutes. To lop it off, the resolution of the movie feels like it's 23 minutes long. With no trust in the audience to piece it all together, he decides to do the world's longest ending by recapping and spelling out everything, including showing you the parts that you've already seen. Instead of focusing the story on telling us the obvious, maybe Schumacher should've taken a look at the actual story he was trying to tell. Maybe then he would've noticed all the stupidisms he made without thinking, like the addition of Jim Carrey's two characters together equaling just another Pet Detective and the number of unfilled plot holes. The only audiences this movie appeals to are people who like feeling smart by piecing together an entire movie before its ending, Jim Carrey fans that like seeing him in serious roles (and even then, be warned that the dialogue is so bad, you'll laugh at his acting in the serious moments) or people who want to see the same over-beaten dead horse-of-a-surprise ending. classified/ - (801) 865-8688 help wonted Nannies Unlimited Great Jobs. Jim Carrey stars as Walter Sparrow, the guy who becomes obsessed with both the book and the number. Shortly after the movie begins, it takes its turn for the worst. Once Walter starts reading the book, he finds similarities between himself, an average animal control officer, and the lead character of the book, a noir-ish detective. Whenever he reads the, book, the movie cuts to a mirrored reality with Carrey playing the role of detective. Just like the detective, Walter begins finding the all-too-recurring 23isms in his own life. Without a doubt, that is the lowest blow Schumacher has ever given his little audience. Instead of connecting the viewer to the story artistically, he throws this jumbled mess into your face shouting: "Do you get it? I'm trying to make you feel like this movie is to you as the book is to Walter! Now. go find all the 23isms in your own life and in the rest of my dumbed-down movie!"
