This Thursday night, Feb. 8, will herald the an-. nual Chocolate Dreams Concert, featuring the renowned Nachtmusik Chamber Orchestra. This unique musical group focuses on the brilliant music of the German and Austrian masters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries like Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and Haydn. This talented orchestra has performed at many events such as the Utah Arts Festival, the Temple Square Concert Series and musical festivals at Sundance. Most members of Nachtmusik Chamber Orchestra are professional musicians, and many are award-winning soloists. Nachtmusik members often perform in ornate period costumes from the eighteenth century, complete with lace, nifties and powdered wigs. The orchestra's conductor (called the Kapellmeister) is one of UVSC's most talented professors, Dr. Marden Pond. Dr. Pond is a recognized composer and has received numerous commissions to create ballet, film and concert scores on local and national labels. As the conductor of Nachtmusik, he is known for his special ability to create a dynamic relationship between the musicians and the audience. The Chocolate Dreams Photo credit/www.sxe.com Concert is sponsored every year by the German deptartment of UVSC in order to give people an unforgettable taste of Germany's rich culture. So where does the chocolate come in? Well, this is no ordinary concert. In between the harmonious music of Germany's finest composers, the audience will enjoy a literal feast of German chocolate confections. Specialties will include black forest cherry cake, Viennese chocolate-apricot creme cake, and the famous Mozartkugeln (rumored to be Mozart's favorite cookie). Because of this enchant-, ing combination of stirring music and scrumptious treats, this night is guaranteed to be a feast for the senses. Audience members will also be humored by anecdotes from Dr. Pond and invited to participate in the music through dancing and applause. Nachtmusik's performances have been hailed by critics as "a treat for the ears, the eyes, and the heart."
