While some of his equipment isn't considered top-of-the-line, Sowby said that being awarded by the AES goes to show he does not need "all that stuff." His clientele list builds all the time. The artist he recorded for his submission to the AES competition was Bryon Friedman, a member of the U.S. Ski Team. Friedman, who is a passionate athlete and musician, was just coming off of an injury he had sustained during training for the Olympics, which the doctors had predicted would keep him from skiing the rest of his life. The AES is an international professional society dedicated to the growth and development of audio technology. Conventions are held regularly world wide by the AES in the hopes of sharing the latest information in audio technology. Despite time conflicts board club rides on From BOARD C L U B - A 1 As one thin, serious looking man in a dark suit approached the campus police officers, who were on hand to direct the flow of traffic, he asked, "Excuse me officer, I'm with the republican convention in the ballroom. Can we park here?" The officer replied, "You can park anywhere you want, as long as it's not on top of a skateboarder." The group of contestants was comprised of an eclectic mix of skateboard types, each with their own individual style of riding. Any imaginable type of skater was entered in the race, from the black leather the top of the course for their next heat. The stages of the race went like clockwork with only one rider succumbing to the most reviled enemy of all longboarders: the speed wobbles; however, he held it together and managed to get off with just a minor spill after winning his particular pairing. After his spill, he promptly picked himself up to the cheers of the crowd, took his seat in the shuttle vehicle and went on to win third place overall. In the end, all three lanes of College Drive were closed, after a few minutes of deliberation between campus police and event coordinators, to let sporting old-school skaters riding 10-inch wide planks that resemble sawed-off Studebakers, reminiscent of the Tony Alva era, to the dreadlocks and hemp clothing skaters on 48" hyper flexible carving boards that mimic a distinctive surfing style. There were even a few members of the fairer sex entered in the contest who, incidentally, held their own in what is an extremely male-dominated sport. Once the race was underway, riders were sent head-to-head, two at a time in a single elimination format; winners of each pair were directed into the back of a pickup truck and promptly shuttled back to the final three riders race head-to-head to determine a definitive winner. Blake Balkman, the first place winner, was awarded a $50 gift certificate to MiIosport. Second place went to one of the female riders Whitney Olson, who was awarded a $25 gift certificate to Milosport. And the trooper who dusted himself off after taking a spill and went on to win third was Jared Maruj, also taking home a $25 gift certificate to Milosport. After the award ceremony, event coordinators raffled off a few prizes including a complete longboard setup donated by event sponsors. Republican Rep. Chris Cannon is coming to speak at Utah Valley State College on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. Elaine Englehardt, distinguished professor of ethics and UVSC's federal legislative liaison, believes most of the time will be spent on questions and answers from Congressman Cannon and that the major focus of his speaking is to talk about democracy. "We try to ensure that the students and faculty of UVSC, as well as the community, are in touch with our U.S. senators and congressmen," said Englehardt. As part of the president's "Federal Outreach Program," Engledardt hopes to have two senators and two congressmen from Utah speak at the campus each year so that the students and community have the chance to gef" to know them. Cannon represents Utah's 3rd Congressional District, which includes the west side of Salt Lake County and most of Utah County. In his ten years of serving in Congress, Cannon has passed legislation including the restriction of online gambling, combating methamphetamines and consolidating school trust lands to provide greater funding for schools in Utah. The event is free and open to the public. He will speak in room 025 of the Liberal Arts Building. Cannon's visit to UVSC is being hosted by professor Oscar Jesperson of the history department, the center for the study of ethics and the office of the president. On Nov. 3, Senator Robert Bennet will speak at 10 a.m. in room 023 of the Liberal Arts building. WANT TO READ MORE? Visit our website NETXNEWS.NET While you're there check out the blogs.
