Show /port/ B8 MONDAY • OCTOBER 23 • 2006 Wolverines milk the Aggies down the stretch UVSC and Utah State battled defensively in the first 45 minutes resulting in a scoreless tie at the break. UVSC's defense was led by stellar play from Brent Henry, Yuhei Nagato and Cory Bowler. The Aggies lone goal came in the early goings of the second half as an Aggie midfielder attempted a deep pass to the attacking third. The ball took an awkward, even funny bounce that went right over the head of UVSC's goalie, Colby Hall, and landed in the back of the net. UVSC played with enough intensity and confidence to come back and answer with the equalizer midway through the second half from co-captain, senior Shuichi Kimura. "My guys showed enough fortitude, strength, and mental capacity to comeback and put their chances away and score the two goals to win the game." said Coach Jazexhiu. Coach Jazexhiu is happy with his teams effort at home but wanted more fans their to see it. "I wish I could have more fans at home so we could feed off the support from the crowd but as you can see we don't have a crowd following us." With the win over USU the Wolverines record is 11-4-1. UVSC concludes the season down in St. George, taking on Dixie State Nov. 4 for their final match. James Warnick Sports Writer The cold, overcast, rainy weather did not slow down the action that ensued on the pitch, as the UVSC men's soccer team came from behind in the second half to beat Utah State 2-1 on the field behind the Education building. Trailing by a goal in the final half hour, UVSC found a way to overcome the deficit and take the eame against Utah State. "We came out strong and had a lot of desire to win our last home game of the, season," first year Coach Elton Jazexhiu said. With the score knotted at a goal each and only 15 minutes of action remaining, both sides really picked up the action and intensity in the final minutes of play. As the 90th minute approached, freshmen and leading goal scorer Alejandro Gutierrez of the Wolverines was able to get downfield ahead of the pack and assist his teammate, freshmen Co-captain Viktor Bezhani, for the winning goal. The Aggies had a 1-0 lead midway through the second half on the Wolverines home field last week, but the Wolverines did not worry. "We played quite well on all sides of the ball tonight and overall we did an excellent job as a team." Jazexhiu said. ward /NetXNews UVSC's Brant He Tigers are roaring from MLB. B7 We have to think that if the Tigers and Jim Leyland really wanted to win the AL Central that they could have, right? Well maybe they did do a complete choke job by giving up the division to the Minnesota Twins, but at least the Tigers are still playing and the Twins are not. Detroit has what it takes to finish the postseason on top of MLB, and with seven days off to prepare, some people question whether it is too much time off. But they will handle it. The Tigers may not be the team of destiny, but they are the team that will walk away with the manager on their shoulders. Just look back at the Oakland series. Nate Robertson got the start and avenged his first playoff outing in game one against the Yankees with five scoreless innings. In game two the A's were thinking 'We got Justin Verlander figured out,' even though he was pitching in the triple digits. as he gave up four runs on seven hits. But again, no matter for Detroit, as their bats came through. Alexis Gomez got the start as DH for his first ever playoff game, and out of nowhere went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Gomez struggled to get to this point in his career, and was even sent to the Minors two times this year by the Tigers. With the offense hitting its stride, the Tigers took a commanding 2-0 lead in the series, winning the first two games on the road. Detroit didn't sive in and held Oakland ANIGHT the ball in last week's match. to just two woeful hits in game three. Even the A's couldn't help from praising Kenny Rogers. Rogers dismissed-the Yankees in the division series a week earlier, and then put Detroit in position to win the ALCS. Oakland talked about coming back from being down 3-0 just like the Red Sox did in 2004, and they even put up a fight. But Magglio Ordonez belted a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to send Detroit to the World Series.; , ... Detroit will probably get the sweep;' and if not a sweep, five games. ^INSTRUMENT^TRAINING 1 0 Night hours Block Time ONL?
