Erb, LPC, NCC, and John F. Catlett, LPC, Mental Health Therapists for UVSC Student Heath Services, were invited to give a presentation on trauma and disaster response to the European Congregation of Work Psychology in Germany. Representatives from across Europe attended this conference. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden and France were present. "Europe is clambering for this knowledge and wanting the training," Erb explained. "There are particularly more terrorist attacks and natural disaster happening there and their mental health providers don't quite know how to help their traumatized patients." A particular example for the need of this knowledge Erb shared was that during the conference, a Chechnyan representative addressed the congress directly before Erb and Catlett's presentation. This person specifically expressed their need of advisement in helping their citizen's cope with individual and community disasters. Erb said it was a great experience to be able to understand the importance of the topic they presented and to know that their information was greatly needed and accepted. Their presentation also explained how mental treatment for trauma response is ever changing. Since such incidences as 9-11 and Katrina, both of which Catlett assisted in disaster relief, the size and scope of the responses are more complex than they have ever been in the past and this is requiring that responders change thetr knowledge in preparation for incident response, as indicated in the presentation abstract. During the presentation, developed from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Field Manual for Mental Health Work and Human Service Workers in Major Disasters by Deborah J. Dewolfe, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., key concepts of disaster mental health were covered and disaster counseling skills, such as stress prevention and management, problem solving and do's and don'ts while treating patients. "It is important to try to alleviate victims of psychological pressure and distress," Erb remarked. "Also one on one interventions are the best way to help." In response to their presentation , Catlett and Erb received invitations to present their material in Sweden and Scotland. Plans for these visits are pending due to fund insufficiency. •Light a fire in her. GEICO.
