Utah Valley State (17-34) was up by the score of 8-2 in the middle of the fourth due to their scoring barrage at the top of the inning. Left fielder Canyon Vance led off the inning by reaching first due to an error by Utah pitcher Kyle Wink. Vance stole second to get into scoring position and first baseman Dan Billow doubled to bring Vance home. Five runs were scored in the inning with two outs, all unearned due to the error by Wink. Utah (23-23) would rally at the bottom of the inning. Ute right fielder Joe Mozeleski hit a two run homer to bring UVSC's lead to four runs. The Wolverine two errors in the inning would let Utah score three more runs to make the score 8-7 at the end of the fourth. Utah third baseman Erich Kemp hit an RBI single to bring Jay Brossman home to even the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Adam Frank would strike out swinging with the bases loaded to end the danger. Utah Valley State would take the lead back quickly in their half of the seventh with a fielder's choice by designated hitter Adam Openshaw that brought Vance home. The Wolverines would not look back for the rest of the night as the Utes would not lead again. The Utes had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh with center fielder John Welsh at the plate, but he grounded out to Bulow to end the inning. Utah would add a run in the eight with a triple to right field by left fielder Corey Shimada that scored pinch runner Mike Tummolo. The Utes would not be able to score again on the afternoon. UVSC'would add a run in both the eight inning with a fly-out to right that brought shortstop Eli Slesk that brought center fielder Nick Connor home and in the ninth with a fly-out to left by catcher Derrick Thomas that let Buiow score. Utah had their chances when King led off the inning with a walk. Kemp and Mozeleski each hit one-out singles to load the bases up. The threat and the game ended however, when catcher Josh Bell hit into a double play. The Wolverines Kalen Parsons (3-8) ended up with a win in three and third innings of work. Parsons held the Utes to one run, struck out two. while walking five. Brian Lane (1-1) got the loss for the Utes by allowing four runs, one earned however and struck out six. Slesk led the way for UVSC, going 2-4 with four RBFs. The Utes offensive leader was Erich Kemp, who had 4 hits on the day, Utah Valley State next face local rivals, Brigham Young University on May 16 at Miller Field at 7 p.m. Kacey Robbins Sports Wrtier Late April, in Windsor, Colorado, Nic Van Vuuren scores in first collegiate tournament win for men's golf. Van Vuuren is a junior from Johannesburg, South Africa. Van Vuuren shot an even par 72, won by four strokes on the final day of the Division I Independent Championship, beating North Dakota State's Eric Johnson. Van Vuuren finished with a 6-under 210 for the tournament on the way to taking the tournament crown. The Wolverine men took sixth place, while the women took seventh. Both will have their teams back, with all underclassmen. Softball found wins over Harvard, SUU and on senior day a win over the University next door; Utah Valley State beat BYU 3-1. The Wolverine softball squad who started off the season strong, started to play some tougher teams, losing to big programs schools such as Oklahoma, Washington and Long Beach. Rachel Hartgrove was named Independent player of the week for the last week of the season, hitting .625 her last three games. Re-write the record books for Utah Valley State's track and field. Joe Bendoski sets a new school record in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:50.07 at the Weber State meet. Other Wolverines performed nicely at the meet as well. Clifton Palmer, finished first in the high jump, jumping the equivalent of Karl Malone, 6,'9". Tim Rowberry finished first in the men's 800 with a time of 1:52.23. Rowberry, who is a freshman, will be a future leader to the Wolverines success. On the women's side of the track team, Kirsten Barney set a personal best mark in the 1500 by running a 4:43.59.
