To arrange for an immediate interview, UVSC's Debate Team qualified for Nationals in both Pros Interpretation and Informative Speaking. The tournament will be the highlight of the year following 12 tournaments and 18 trophies collected by the team throughout both semesters. This years Nationals held the 15th18th of April, will prove to be great progress for the team. Jason Zeller, who has helped to earn the team their many wins throughout the year, will represent the Debate team. Zeller has competed in three National tournaments in the past and hopes to gain a win for UVSC. The Debate team has been around campus for a number of years but became fully active again just this last year. The first semester proved to be difficult for the team with only a small amount of. funding and only two tournaments. This semester, the team has accomplished a lot partly due to the help on campus from The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS). $10,000 was given to the team to help fund their tournaments and traveling. The members of the Debate Team have traveled all over the country for various tournaments including: California, Wyoming, Colorado, Oregon, Texas, and more. The traveling takes a hard toll for the students involved with the team because they are gone almost every other weekend. "It totally impacts my life. I have to be up to date in all my classes and ahead of the game," said Zeller. The typical schedule of a student dur- UVSC faculty member and debate coach Jason Nichols. Melissa Matheney/ NetXNews ing the debate tournament consists of twelve or more hours a day competing. "Your up at six in the morning and the tournament at seven. Your still there by ten with no lunch break and to bed by midnight, it's a crazy schedule," Zeller said. Currently, there are three members of the debate team, lead by the coach Jason Nichols. Nichols is currently involved with the Communications department teaching public speaking, he has participated in debate throughout both high school and college. Nichols has volunteered his spare time to the program and plans to pass over the program to a new advisor next year, who will also be volunteering. "I expect next year to be a year at least as successful as this year with at least eight tournaments as well as a National tournament and we will win as many if not more trophies as this year," Nichols said. "Any school with a four year communications degree needs to have a full fledged debate program, that is where I .would like the program to go," Zeller said. Debate is a good program to get involved in if you need to improve your people skills and speech skills. "Speech and debate is a very relative sport. There aren't any specific rules, and there are a lol of unwritten rules. It all depends on how the judge feels," Zeller said. Any student interested in joining the debate team next year will need to be able to take the class and be willing to travel and compete in tournaments.
