Show new/ A2 Campus pioneer will be remembered John Ditzler Executive Editor "He was deeply proud of this school. The day will come when it's a University and it's too bad he won't be there to see it cause he would have loved that," said UVSC student Craig Tanner of his father George Tanner. George Tanner was directly responsible for the development of UVSC's library. Tanner passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2006. Under Tanner's direction the college's library expanded from several hundred volumes to over 20,000 before Tanner retired from Utah Valley Community College where he was employed as the Head Librarian and founding chairman of the Theater and Dramatic Arts Department. As President of the Utah Librarian's Association Tanner developed the Interlibrary Loan Program for UVSC back when it was still Utah Technical College. Interlibrary Loan allows students from different institutions of higher education across the state to access and borrow books from libraries other than just the one belonging to the particular school to which a student is enrolled. George Tanner "launched the schools first plays, he launched the drama department," said Craig Tanner, "he was the loan officer for student loans, and he taught wood carving and English Literature here at UVSC." Craig Tanner remembers his father playing Santa Claus on campus at Christmas time for the children of UVSC students and faculty, and the MONDAY* MARCH 13 -2006 UVSC to host United Nations conference on Central Asia the U.S. from various Central Asian countries have been invited to attend as well. "The lunchroom was packed for the performances," said Craig Tanner. "At the time. President Sorensen needed a library for the school so it could be certified as a college so he hired George to make the school a real library and get it certified," said Craig Tanner. "He put a spark in the whole system for accreditation and then the funding followed. He helped give the school credibility." Craig Tanner also said George Tanner worked with President Sorensen to start UVSC's drive to court and admit international students. Today there are approximately 600 international students enrolled at UVSC. Funeral services were held at a local LDS chapel March 11. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
