Trailing all of the game but never completely out of it, the Blaze needed a defensive stop on a 3rd and two with 30 seconds left, but Dallas TE Rickie Simmons caught a one-handed, four-yard completion to seal the win for the Desperados and ruin the Blaze's debut in Salt Lake City. Despite the loss, it was evident many were excited to see arena football back in Utah. "This Arena Football is the best thing Utah has seen in years," said Gus Rodriguez of American Fork. "I'm impressed with the show so far," added Amber Bagundi of South Jordan, a mother of three who brought her whole family. "This is definitely cool, and something the whole family can enjoy together." Former Ohio State star Joe Germaine threw five touchdown passes and passed for a total of 350 yards for Utah. Germaine's longest was a 39-yard score caught by Tom Pace, cutting what was once a 16-point Dallas lead down to only two with 11 minutes remaining, Dallas quickly scored again on their ensuing possession. Desperado's QB Clint Dolezel found Terrill Shaw from three yards out for his seventh TD pass of the game. Send Resume to ; nanotechnology2006@gmail.com All Wolverine basketball winning streak continues UVSC upped their winning streak to seven after recording only their second road victory of the season, beating Texas-Pan American 55-52. David Heck led the comeback effort for the Wolverines with 13 points. UVSC trailed 51-48 with two minutes left when Heck scored a big bucket inside the lane. The junior forward also came through at the line, converting on his final four free throw attempts; the last two coming with just 9.6 seconds on the clock putting the Wolverines up for good. Though Heck came through in crunch time, poor free throw shooting nearly cost Utah Valley. As a team, UV shot only 54 percent in the second half and only 47 percent for the game. "I was proud of how the kids battled through the missed free throws," said UV head coach Dick Hunsaker. "Heck was terrific down the stretch." The contest was close throughout with the score tied 15 different times, and no team ever leading by more than six. TPA led by one at halftime, but UV held a 43-37 advantage at the 10:56 mark in the second half. In the last three years, no other Independent school has won seven straight games. UVSC now improves to 13-11. Baseball falls in opener UVSC scored five runs in the 8th inning to erase a 4-1 Southern Utah lead, but couldn't hold off the Thunderbirds in their season opener, losing a 7-6 thriller in Cedar City. Jeff Oliverson delivered a bases loaded double in the ninth to lift the T-Birds to victory. "We had our chances," said UV head coach Steve Gardner. "We were right there, we just gave them too many opportunities." Sophomore Adam Openshaw led the way offensive- ly for Utah Valley with a solo homerun in the 7th and a big three-run double in the 8th that put Utah Valley on top at 6-4. But after a walk, an error and a single by T-Bird (right fielder) Amos Burgess, Oliverson's double off UV reliever Marcus Moore was all it took. Jeff Gillins picked up the win for SUU while Moore recorded the loss. The UV defeat is the first of a three game weekend series with Southern Utah. Teaching positions. F/T or P/T available. The Lady WolVerines struggled offensively, but found a way to come back in the second half and top Division II Grand Canyon 56-43. Trailing by nine three minutes into the second half, Utah Valley used a 12-3 run to take its first lead of the half at 3534. The Wolverines continued building the advantage from that point on. "I don't know if it counts as a defensive battle when you just can't find the bottom of the basket," said UV head coach Cathy Nixon in response to her team shooting only 28 percent. Lucky for her, Grand Canyon had their own troubles from the field, shooting just 25 percent themselves. Hollie Beaman led the way for UVSC with 11 points and seven rebounds. Miriam Palkki contributed ten points and ten rebounds. In the first half, there were a total of seven lead changes. With the win, Utah Valley improves to 8-13 on the year. Track records fly in Idaho Six records were broken by the UVSC track team in Pocatello, Idaho at the Mountain State Games. Included among these, was the Wolverine foursome of Tim Rowberry, Chris Fogt, Peter Holm and Mark Lott breaking the previous best distance medley time with a time of 10:03.31. Joe Bendoski also set a new record in the men's 5,000 meter. On the women's side, Tawny Judkins set a new high in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet and 1/2 inch. Tiera Zaugg set the pentathlon record with 2,964 points, and Marima Salifu did the same in the 200, breaking her own record by running a time of 25:31 hou/ing Provo 2 weeks free rent. CALL 772-3100 Wolverine Wisdom Any insight into the outlook of UVSC baseball this year? —Stuey, Cedar Hills Well, it's difficult to predict how good they'll be, if that's what you're asking. The boys in spikes lost both Kory Drew and Trent Perry. Drew was the Independent Newcomer of the Year and Perry was probably their most consistent bat as far as run production goes. They do return, however, the likes of (shortstop) Eli Slesk and (first baseman) Dan Bulow to anchor things in '06. Seniors Canyon Vance and Reno Mendenhall also return to provide leadership. Pitching and consistency are the big question marks though. UV won some big games last season, but also lost a lot of games they weren't supposed to; hencefthe 17-39 record. Absolutely. You, my friend, are not alone. Chick-fil-A has been replaced by the most generic chicken on earth, Stone Willy's was twice as good as Freschettas, food services got rid of the Italian Grill (the most popular item on campus), and the Wednesday buffet no longer exists anymore. Plus, the food upstairs seems to be getting progressively worse for some reason. I don't know if it's budget cuts or what, but there really is no excuse for the drastic downgrade in quality. If it wasn't for Teriyaki Stix and their Kalua Pork, I'd probably go hungry. '". "> - , ° v V»'•'"""• |
