What we need are fewer twelve-step programs and more twelvegauge shotguns. —Name withheld It is men not women, who have promoted the cult of brutal masculinity; and because men admire muscle and physical force, they assume we do too. President Bush's State of the Union was one of his finest moments. He was articulate, strong, and caught the attention of the nation from the moment he began to speak. I especially appreciate his resolve to ask Congress to renew the Patriot Act in the bold and agressive fight in the war against terror. This plan, along with his domestic wire tapping program, is ESSENTIAL to fighting our enemies both domestically and internationally. The Patriot Act has protected us from countless terror attempts on our country since September 11. It is helping bring to justice the leaders of Hamas and Al-Queda. I think it is pathetic on the part of the Democrats and Liberals to call for a defeat of this act. If they have any better ideas on how to protect our nation, I am sure we would all love to hear about them. I also very much appreciate the President's committment to finishing the job in Iraq and bringing our troops home with honor. I commend that he has stood toe-to-toe with Liberals like Kennedy, Murtha, Kerry, Clinton, and Dean when they have all said that we need to curl up and run away. Freedom has never been won by retreating; it has been won with courage, and President Bush and our military is full of it. I hope the nation will rally behind America's pledge to secure freedom, and not the Liberal ideology of retreat and fear. We are living in trying times. It is time for us to show backbone, courage, and strength, and not hide behind the irresponsible actions of Liberals, the Democratic Party, and anti-war activists. Take a stand and back President Bush in these causes. I know I will continue to do so. College Republicans email VVSCgorepublicans@yaiioo.com —Elizabeth G. The President continued to try and make the case that somehow, free elections in the Middle East equals democracy and peace, which will have a rippling effect in the region. He went on to say that we are winning the War on Terror which is making America safer. However, nothing could be further from the truth. When one looks at what free elections in the Middle East has produced; Iraq has a Shiite led theocracy while Palestine has Hamas, which like Iran, wants to destroy Israel. There is no peace or democracy in this. As the stability of the region continues to get worse, the Bush administration wants the American people to believe that *'We are winning the War on Terror." While this statement is not only false, it continues to undermine our goals in the region as George Bush is not capable of admitting that his policies have failed. This failure continues to result in more casualities and injuries which most people. Coalition Forces and Iraqis, will never fully recover from. While all of this is going on, the troops are caught in the middle of what is becoming a civil war in Iraq with Sunnis and Shiites killing each other. This cultural divide among two ethnic groups which can be traced back to 700 A.D. is now supposed to work out so democracy can exist in a country that has no foundation for it. It does not take a scholar to understand the differences between what the Bush administration is saying and what reality is. While the solution is not simple, it does require bringing the troops home as soon as possible.
