This cutting edge Internet site broadcasts live recordings from the best of local music talent, new and old. You may not recognize many of the artists, but they are dedicated to local music and have a lot to offer. Live in the Lobby was cofounded and is directed by UVSC student Brian Baldwin. Chicago-born and Cincinnati-raised, Baldwin is now a senior in the History Education program. But his true passion is music and radio broadcasting. Ten years of DJ experience, including Orem High's KOHS and currently 94.9 The Blaze, taught Baldwin a few things about the music industry. "There's really no difference between a well-paid, famous, national band and a talented local band except quality airtime," Baldwin said. He feels that the corporate globalization of music falls incredibly short by not giving local music scenes a chance. By creating Live in the Lobby, Baldwin, along with the site's producer, Charko, has dedicated himself to searching out local talent and giving them the opportunities and recognition they deserve. Anything from garage bands to solo artists can have the chance to be broadcasted via Internet on Live in the Lobby, even if they have no previous recording experience. Although the project is only two months old, such a good response was received from the first episode that several others were made and even more are in the works. From brand new artists like Cedar and Stephanie Smith to more established artists like Clover, Sunfall Festival, and The Matt Lewis Band, all Utah musicians can have the opportunity to be a part of this innovative project. Soon Live in the Lobby will be available on the radio as well. Orem's station KOHS 91.7 FM has agreed to begin airing Live in the Lobby recordings. With all this unexpected success and these new opportunities appearing, Baldwin is currently seeking out more local music talent to add to this exciting line up. Interested musicians can record their music to be broadcasted and even have a chance for interview time. Baldwin understands the difficulties Utah artists face trying to break through, and said that, "unless you already have a name for yourself, like Green Day and Rob Thomas, it can be really hard to get attention from radio or its listeners." He urges all local musicians to get involved with Live in the Lobby. You can send him albums, mp3s, or email him if you're interested in doing a recording. "Let's stop feeding the beast and bring back the passion for local music," Baldwin said. "Give the local scene a shot. There is definitely something for everyone."
