Show life MONDAY* SEPTEMBER 12-2005 Addicting Celebration of life held at Starry Night From MYSPACE. B6 fessors. Students can rank a professor's teaching style (and even how hot they are) as well as leave comments. "I have been using the rate my professor website since I've been going to UVSC," said business major Courtney Welch. "...I go to this site when I'm looking at the class schedules. So far I have not had a bad teacher." At last week's ethics panel, community member Norm Nielsen asked if there was a website that students could go to and learn about the teaching styles of different professors. Several audience members shouted out MySpace in unison. But it isn't just students that are using MySpace to stay connected. Just this semester philosophy professor Dennis Potter joined MySpace to keep connected to students in his Situiationist independent study class. Assignments and readings are posted and students can communicate with each other from wherever they might be. When students from UVSC died last month in a spelunking accident, MySpace became an outlet for mourners to share their feelings. At Jen Galbraith's services her family printed up a book with the hundreds of comments that her friends had left her on her MySpace page after her death. John Ditzler Executive Editor Community came together Saturday August 27 to celebrate the lives of four of its recently deceased. An evening of music, dance and performance of the spoken word was held at Provo's Starry Night venue in remembrance of Blake Donner, Ariel Singer, Jen Galbraith and Scott McDonald who recently died together in an underwater caving accident in the Provo foothills. The event was organized by UVSC student Joey Mayes as a benefit concert with the proceeds being donated to various causes or individuals connected with the deceased. A book of Ariel's poetry is being published with part of the proceeds. One of the deceased's family members will receive part of the proceeds to help cover funeral and burial expenses. Half of the evenings' proceeds are being donated to memorial scholarship funds in Jen and Blake's names at UVSC. Tickets were $3 dollars at the door. Mayes estimates there were probably 100 or so people at Starry Night on Saturday night. A total of $450 was raised. "Some people gave more than the required door fee," Mayes said, "because it was going to a good cause." The evening commenced with an instrumental performance, absent Ariel's vocals, by her band Extraction Point. It was a poignant reminder that Ariel's music and the lives of those who remember her will continue on without her. With the death of their lead singer, Extraction Point has decided to change their name but will continue creating andperformingmusic together. Following Extraction Point, UVSC student Dylan Harris performed several songs. After which Cherryl Runion, a friend of Ariel, read some of Ariel's poetry. UVSC student Sam Banford read some of Blake's poetry and then several of his own poems. UVSC professor Alex Caldiero then "did his thing," as one attendee clci//ified/ help wanted Nannies Unlimited Great Jobs. Nation Wide - Out of State, f yr commitment. "So UVSC Professor John Goshert performed several songs with Kelly Green," Mayes continued, "Starry Night owner Kelly O' Conner sang a few songs, so did Cellar Door, and some friends Anna and Justin."
