Show MONDAY'SEPTEMBER 12*2005 ijour compu/ Intramural involvement A7 op around the world in one store. Melissa Matheney Your Campus Editor A passion for the outdoors led Chris Finch to the intramurals program. Finch originally got involved with intramurals playing flag football and participating in past pool tournaments. Now Finch has moved up to help others get involved with the Intramural program. "Students should get involved with Intramurals because it's a good way to meet people and have fun on campus. Plus, it helps escape the boredom, and it's cheap," Finch said. Finch decided to work with the program because it fit nicely around his school schedule and allows him to do what he likes everyday. As a full time student, Finch started coming to UVSC to get a secondary education in English in order to teach junior high students. After taking a geology class on campus, Finch developed a new interest in teaching science. "I want to change the view of science teachers and become a science teacher that kids like," Finch said. Finch's least favorite subject is math. "I've always hated math," Finch said. Although Finch no longer plays flag football with the program, it is still his most looked-forward to event each year on campus. UVSC no longer offers pool tourna- t Melissa Matheney/NetXNews Intramurals office employee Chris Finch ments, so Finch takes his talents to Ozz each week to keep up on his practice. Finch plays pool every Tuesday in the tournaments held at Ozz, as well as practicing on the weekends when he can. Finch enjoys camping and hiking in his free time and enjoys just about anything involving the outdoors. Anyone interested in more information about Intramurals can contact Chris Finch at the Intramurals office in the Sorenson Student Center. •• Gifts and groceries from Japan, . Distrance education offers new courses to students Melissa Matheney Your Campus Editor Distance Education now offers courses via broadcast and cable television, the Internet, and live interactive courses at regular UVSC tuition costs. The Distance Education Department provides six full degree programs, three in development, and all general courses to students. Among these degrees is certification for alcohol and substance abuse counseling. Each course includes a variety of help and assistance provided online, including live tutors, library resources, and one-on-one help with live professors. Over the last five years enrollment in Distance Education has grown from just 1,300 students to over 10,000. It is now one of the largest undergraduate programs in the country. Nationally, the completion rate for Distance Education is only 50 percent, but UVSC has a surprising 87 percent completion rate for the program. Services are provided to anyone who wants to learn and continue their education. "Just because life happens, it doesn't mean that education needs to stop for it," said Farah Chase-Dunn, the Public Relations Coordinator for Distance Education. Currently 77 active service men and women are enrolled at UVSC through distance education while in active duty. These are just a few of the many different kinds of students enrolled around the world. The program also includes working mothers and fathers, as well as immigrants and pilots who are flying around the world. Athletes are also offered the program so they can finish their schooling while they are touring and on the road. Distance Education is also offering classes to many of the recent hurricane victims. The program has issued a call to take on any students who have been displaced and no longer have a school to go to because of the disaster. Last year when Michael Moore came to UVSC's campus, five countries tuned in through Distance Education, including Germany, Mexico, England and Canada. Distance Education has now teamed up with Comcast to offer Video-On-Demand so that students can now watch their classes at a convenient time that works with their schedules. The program has many upcoming goals, including providing more on-line services such as the ability to watch athletic games and events. They are also trying to incorporate the NCAA next year to provide classes for the players who would like an extended education. Currently, the bookstore and other facilities on campus are working together to provide apparel sales online so that students across the country can support UVSC wherever they are. "Every department on campus helps; it's a combined effort. If we didn't work at it, it would never be possible," Chase-Dunn said. The program is also offering help to faculty now for technical questions. If any faculty member needs training or assistance in technology, Distance Education will now teach it to the faculty at no price.
