Kansas State Utah Valley State's women's volleyball team came back to win game two v. the University of Kansas, but dropped their 2005 season opener to the strong and experienced Jayhawks squad three games to one Thursday night (30-20. 29-31, 30-19, 30-18) in the first game of the Utah Valley/BYU Challenge. Tied at a game apiece, Kansas quickly re-took the momentum by taking advantage of 31 attack errors and 11 UV service errors to dominate both games three and four. "We were never close," said Wolverine head coach, Sam Atoa, referring to his team's final two stanzas, "Our passing really failed us in certain areas. And at times, it wasn't working for us at all." The Jayhawks established their aggressive style of play early in game one and rarely let up. Led by their 6'3 outside hitter Paula Caten, a senior from Canarana, Brazil, she notched 14 kills to go along with two blocks and even a couple of serving aces on the night in leading KU to a ten point victory. Despite a mini UVSC rally midway through game one, Coach Atoa recognized the Jayhawks opening dominance from the sideline. "The score didn't really indicate how lopsided it was." Even though game two started out much like the first one did with Kansas jumping out to a quick 6-0 advantage, the resilient Wolverines countered with an 8-2 run of their own evening up the score at eight apiece. UVSC exchanged point for point with Kansas until finally taking their first lead of the match 2726. "I was just praying that they would make a mistake and we'd do something good," Atoa chuckled remembering how fortunate his team was to steal the 31-29 win." A couple Jayhawk mistakes, including a service error helped Utah Valley even it up. "Even though we kind of lucked out a little bit, 1 thought the girls did a really nice job," said Atoa. "We were so excited, and it felt so great lo finally come together and win that game," mentioned Wolverine cocaptain and junior setter, Lacee Koellikcr. "We need to remember how that feels lor our upcoming matches."' The game two victory marked the first time Kansas (3-0) had dropped a single game all season, and the Wolverines came out of the locker room confident they could do it again. But, following a timeout called by eight-year Kansas head man, Ray Bechard in which UVSC started out hot, the Jayhawks quickly exploded by opening up a 12 point lead on a total of 16 kills and five game three blocks. Kansas middle biocker, Josi Lima ol Sao Paulo, Brazil, led the charge amassing 5 kills of her own in game three. KU gave the young Wolverines little breathing room the rest of the way and cruised to a 30-19 victory. In game four, the Brazilians, Caten and Lima, along with junior outside hitter Jana Correa (also from Brazil) showed a killer instinct, soundly finishing off the year three division one Independent. "We just have to keep focusing on ihc positive things," said Atoa after the game. "The girls, they'll get there. I have a lot of confidence in'their ability and we're going to be alright." Freshman outside hitter, Camie Manwill, had an impressive debut with seven kills and six digs. Koelliker (who set a school record last season with over 11 assists a game) contributed well again with 33 assists for the match. Sophomore Jessica Endres led Utah Valley with 11 kills. Montana State In their second match of the Utah Valley/BYU Challenge, UVSC fell to Montana State three games to one (2230, 30-23, 30-26, 30-21) Saturday afternoon. Following a nervous performance against Kansas Thursday night, the Wolverines looked to jump out early and take control Saturday. And in game one they did just that, collecting 18 kills, an ace, and a block en route to a dominant 30-22 win. But the Bobcats came out more aggressively in game two, opening up a with a 10-5 lead. UVSC rallied to even things up at 14, but a slew of errors, including four service errors and several misplaced passes halted the Wolverine's" efforts, losing 30-23. In games three and four the Bobcats could do no wrong, as they added four blocks and 34 kills on their way to closing out the match convincingly. Despite the loss, the Wolverines had a number of bright spots. Four players (senior Anne Olsen, junior Stephanie McFarland, sophomore Jessica Endres, and freshman Camie Manwill) all ended up with double digit kill totals. Junior setter Lacee Koelliker had 46 assists, while Maegan Hoyt stuck 29 digs. The Wolverines will be looking for their first home win Friday September 16, as they host the Idaho State Bengals at 7:30 PM in the Activity Center. 4 X 6 PHOTO PRINTER $KU«ft708226 eOPTO 30 rj -OTH O i O l W C rS; FOP ONLY FREE CASE Wifh Purchase $50 Value lop'fp \~or, a 1 S' wieo.i 256 MB %AM ard u 40GB hmd dr.vt-.
