Show mayor church refused to sign three city warrants A briet brief session ot of the city council was held last friday evening with mayor church in the chair and coun cilien fields bunnell and firth present the business transacted was prin cipully ot of a routine nature such as the payment of bills against the city the reading ot of reports etc among the bills was a claim of the eureka hill mining company for 46 covering water tor for the month of jan uary nary which was allowed and the re corder instructed to issue a warrant in favor ot of the company when the recorder read the bills of frank gear and arthur carlson for work on the streets and a bill from city attorney edward pike tor for expense of a trip to salt lake for special ie le gal advice pertaining to the present mix up between the socialist mayor and the citizen party council the may mayor ar served notice that he lie would not sign the warrants and conse no action was taken on these three claims the mayor explains his actions by saying that the street work was performed at the request of gus J henriod whom he claims Is acting as city marshal without au dhority the mayor also maintains that the bill from mr pike Is not a proper one for payment by eureka city as the council did not authorize this trip in open session and the ad vice which he received it Is alleged was tor for the enlightenment of citi zen party members of the council and not for the benefit ot of the city the mayor made a similar trip and paid his own expenses applications for new licenses were presented by the proprietors of halt half a dozen soft drink establish ments but owing to the tact fact that only one member of the license committee was present at the meeting these it 11 censes were not issued at a previous meeting of the council a mo tion was made and carried that these applications must have the endorse ment of the license committee be tore fore licenses are issued the recorder was authorized to purchase a new flag tor for the pole in front of the city hall and the mar or one of his assistants asse stants must I 1 attend to the raising and lowering of 0 this flag each morning and even ing dr L B laker the city physician submitted a complete report regard ing the public health this report showed that during january 3 cases of scarlet fever 3 cases ol 01 small pox 2 cases of diphtheria 3 cases of mea 5 cases of chicken pox and 5 cases ot of pneumonia had been report ed four deaths took place irked reka during the month the city physician said that only tour four cases of contagious cont ageous disease were under quarantine when his report was made up showing that while there was quite a lot of sickness during january the outlook was very good for the month ot of february there has been an epidemic of mumps in this city during the past winter but the disease has been almost wiped out |
