For the first time since 2007, the Aggies defeated the Idaho State Bengals (3-4-0) as they improve to 8 - 0 on the season, after the 6-nil victory. The Aggies' six goals on the day is something that has only happened five other times in school history. USU had a strong start, scoring its first two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Those two scores came within five minutes of each other. Utah State defender Natalie Norris came out to score her first two goals of the season. Norris scored her first goal at the 4th minute, with a header coming from a corner kick sent in by midfielder Kendra Pemberton. ii ... We're all just a really tight-knit team and that comes out on the field." — Shantell Flanary, USU Soccer "I've been waiting to make these goals all year, and I finally got it after one of Kendra's beautiful punches," Natalie Norris said. Norris scored the Aggies' second goal of the day, three minutes later, from eight yards out. "We knew Idaho State would be a tough game for us, and we came out and sent a message today, " Norris said. Aggie forward Shantel Flannary unloaded her first career hat-trick, after going without a goal for three consecutive games. She picked up her first goal at the 17th minute due to a Bengal defensive mistake. Midfielder Lexie Morgan set up Jennifer Flynn who found Flannary. Flannary's second goal came one minute later. The senior stole the ball from an ISU defender and scored, unassisted, from 18 yards out. "We're all just a really close, tight-knit team and that definitely comes out on the field to make us play strongly together," Flannary said. During the first half, the Aggies came out and played tough defense, not allowing any goals. Utah State rolled through the Wildcats in the second half and outscored the in-state foes 37- 0 to pick up the first win of the season in the home-opener. Weber scored all of its 17 points in the first half. On the first touchdown drive, Weber State quarterback Mike Hoke passed the ball to Eric Shufford on the flat. The freshman receiver then heaved the ball down the field to senior wide out Austin Raught, who took the ball down to the 1-yard line. The double pass set up freshman running back Tanner Hinds to punch the ball in on the next play to make it 7-3. USU gave up 20 yards in penalties on the scoring drive. Hoke was sacked four times in the game and completed 20 of 33 passes, for 138 yards and one touchdown. The Aggies allowed only 46 net yards rushing against the Wildcats. TODD JONES photo Rushing, rushing, rushing. It made all the difference for the Utah State football team, Saturday night. The Aggies amassed 440 yards of rushing — their most since 467 yards against Denver in 1960 — and held in-state foe Weber State to just 46 yards, en route to a 54-17 victory on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium. The first half was somewhat forgettable for USU on the offensive side of the ball, but the Aggies were able to contain the Wildcats defensively — especially on the ground. USU allowed only 30 yards on the ground in the first half. "We knew we needed to take away the run. Obviously, last week they got into a power run game and were very successful with it," head coach Gary Andersen said. "I think it was defined very early in the game that they weren't going to be able to run the power play effectively; they weren't going to be able to grind the ball effectively." The Wildcats rushed for 221 yards against Wyoming in their first game, but the Aggies, who allowed Auburn only 78 yards on the ground, had no plans of letting anyone get anything productive going on the ground. "There was a big emphasis coming into camp," senior linebacker Bobby Wagner said. "We want to make sure that teams know that when they come here they are going to have to air the ball out. They're not going to be able to run the ball like they did last year. Me, being a linebacker, it's good when we stop the run. So we've got to come up and smack whatever comes is in your way, and make sure they can't run the ball." Wagner recorded his second consecutive game with 10 tackles and put some hard hits on Weber State. "Weber was talking a lot of trash and I did not like that," Wagner said. "So I made it a point that if they came in my sight, they were going to get smacked. I think the first half I did it a couple of times, and second half they See LINEMEN, Page 11 |
