This place is the American West Heritage Center located on Highway 89-91 in Weilsville. David Sidvvell, program director at American West Heritage Center, said the farm began in the 1960s with only one building located on the farm. Later it became the Jensen Historical Living farm. Eventually in the 1990s, Sidwell said the famous Festival of the American West, that originally was featured at Utah State, moved to this site. The farm is a nonprofit organization composed of numerous sites and attractions for visitors to see. Some of these attrac- tions include the pioneer site, where visitors can make candles, card wool, play old-fashioned pioneer games, pull a handcart and sample authentic food. Another attraction to visit is the farm site where there are rustic barns, vintage farm machinery, a blacksmith shop, livestock and an outdoor kitchen where visitors can experience washing clothes on a washboard. Other seasonal events include Baby Animal Day, a corn maze. Haunted Hollow, Victorian Christmas Feast, Fiber Arts Week, summer camps and the Pioneer Olympics. Sidwell said the goal of the center is to bring the history of Cache Valley to life. "Our goal and our mission is to celebrate and preserve the heritage of our area, and so we do it through these various activities," he said. USU has many students and interns that participate in the farm. Sidwell said a few of the areas they help with are working on history and research, making exhibits and said many volunteer their time throughout the summer as well. Nelda Ault, the farm's education coordinator, said the center loves those who volunteer and intern. "Send us interns, and we can always use volunteers. It's a good place to visit," Ault said. In addition to the great experience these students have, she said they also in some cases can receive credit toward their major. -delayne.locke@aggiemail. usu.edu Here comes trouble Trevor Andrew, a.k.a Trouble Andrew, Produced by John Hill/Shitake Monkey is a pro-snowboarder and (Santogold, Lykke Li) and Olympic athlete, so it's no mixed by Mark Needham surprise that his first album Amanda Mears (The Killers), Trouble plays like the soundtrack to a Andrew's first release is Burton movie. reminiscent of a a crossover collaboration between However, the surprise hip-hop and electro-rock. is how listenable Trouble Andrew's self-titled release Although I can only Grade 8 is, even for those who can't hope Trouble Andrew is pull off a five-forty tail grab. Tune Takes Water: Enjoy time on the river 3 continuedfrom page 5 it and then you go back and run it again. It s intense but it teaches you how to row and what to do in scary situations." After three weeks of rigorous training, Andersen said guides pay to take a written test about the water and boating. Depending on how they do, she said guides either receive a Guide 1 license or Guide 3 license. Those who receive a Guide 1, the captain license, have the ability to run any trip. Guide 3 license can run any trip as long as there is a guide with a Guide 1 license aboard. Andersen said one of her scariest experiences as a river guide was during her training on West Water when she accidentally hit a rapid called Skull Hole. "If you hit Skull Hole, it's so big that at the right water level it could kill you because it will take you straight into a rock wall," she said. "It will flip your boat and suck you underneath." Andersen said when she hit the rapid it dumped her and one other girl out of the boat. Luckily, she said her trainer jumped on the oars and pulled the boat away from the rock and pulled her and the other river guide out of the water. Andersen said her experiences as a river guide have been some of the best in her life, "It's been some of the best experiences I've had being down there because I get to be out in the middle of nowhere with a group of people, and you kind of learn to see what life is really about when not surrounded with all the technology and distractions at home and school," she said. Andersen said becoming good friends with the passengers is also one of the best parts of the job. "You meet some of the most incredible people that are your passengers," she said. "1*11 stay in contact with some of my passengers for years, if not the rest of my life." -karlie.brand@aggiemail.usu.edu |
