(AP) - Barack Obama has the presidency. John McCain has a framed photograph next to one of John Kerry at a rural northwest Kansas bank. First State Bank's "They Also Ran" gallery, a tribute to losing presidential candidates, added the Republican candidate's image Tuesday to a row of black-and-white drawings and photographs that starts with Thomas Jefferson, who lost to John Adams in 1796. Curator Lee Ann Shearer - who is also the bookkeeper at the Norton bank - said about 30 people showed up, sipping punch and sampling cookies she helped bake. A few stuck around to watch Obama become the nation's 44th president on a TV set up in the gallery. "I got goose bumps. I'm kind of sentimental about my country. It s history in the making," Shearer said. The gallery now has 59 not-quite-presidential images, although 14 of the honorees did hold the office at some point. Boy, 8, spent 10 days with dead mom ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - An 8-yearold boy lived for more than a week with the body of his dead mother before anyone discovered his situation, police said. The woman, 41, apparently died Jan. 9 in their apartment in the Detroit suburb of Romulus, and the boy survived in part by eating dried rice, butter and flour, authorities said. The boy came into Romulus Liquor in recent days wearing pajama bottoms and buying snacks, store owner Sam Saco told The Detroit News. Saco said his brother Lee, the store's co-owner, became suspicious Monday when the boy tried to buy soda, flour and doughnuts with his mother's expired credit card. Lee Saco asked to talk to the boy's mother, his brother told the newspaper, and the boy replied, "My moms in a better place right now." He also said, "I tried to wake her up every day. I wanted to talk to her," Sam Saco said. The boy was home-schooled, has no siblings and his father died several years ago, authorities said. The two had moved to Michigan from Louisiana after surviving Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Celebs&People from luncheon with Obama WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, ill with a brain tumor, suffered an apparent seizure at a post-inauguration luncheon for President Barack Obama on Tuesday and was rushed by ambulance from the Capitol to a hospital. There was no immediate word from medical personnel on his condition, although fellow senators said he remained conscious as he was taken for further evaluation and was upbeat and joking. A spokeswoman at the Washington Hospital Center said the Massachusetts Democrat was awake and answering questions when he arrived and was able to receive a phone call from Obama. Kennedy's wife, Vicki, and son Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.L, were with him. A few hours later, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., visited Kennedy, 76, whom he said had suffered "a mild seizure similar to what he's had before. It's part of the battle he's fighting" since he was diagnosed with brain cancer and had surgery last year. Kerry said Kennedy would remain overnight at the hospital. "He's laughing and joking right now. He's got all his Irish dander up," he added. There was no immediate word on what tests would be conducted on Kennedy. Standard procedure in cases like his often calls for a CT scan to search for any bleeding or any other abnormalities in the brain. "It looked like a seizure," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, RUtah, who told reporters he was with Kennedy until they reached the ambulance. Kerry said he and Mrs. Kennedy took hold of the senator as he became ill at the early afternoon lunch. Added Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., "It took a lot SEN. TED KENNEDY, D-MASS., arrives for the swearing-in ceremony of President Barack Obama Tuesday. Kennedy suffered an apparent seizure at a post-inauguration luncheon. AP photo out of him. Seizures are exhausting." Even so, Dodd quoted Kennedy as saying, "I'll be OK, I'll see you later" as he was put into the ambulance. "The good news is he's gonna be fine," Dodd added. Kennedy had appeared in good health and spirits a few hours earlier when he stepped out of the Capitol and onto the inauguration platform where Obama took the oath of office. His endorsement of the former Illinois senator had come at a pivotal point in the Democratic presidential race, and the older man campaigned energetically for the younger one. General Mills and Kroger pull infected peanut butter items MILWAUKEE (AP) - General Mills Inc. and grocers Kroger Co. and Safeway Inc. have joined the growing list of food companies and retailers pulling items made with peanut butter amid a salmonella outbreak. The Food and Drug Administration has traced the outbreak to a Georgia plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America, which makes peanut butter and peanut paste and sells it to institutions and food companies. The outbreak may have contributed to the deaths of six people and sickened more than 470 others in 43 states. The government has advised consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods containing peanut butter until health officials learn more about the contamination. Peanut butter sold in jars to consumers is not included, officials said. The FDA has created a searchable list of recalled products and brands on the agency's Web site. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the bacteria behind the outbreak is common and not an unusually dangerous strain but that the elderly or those with weakened immune systems are more at risk. At least five of the six people who died were elderly. All had salmonella when they died, though their exact causes of death haven't been determined. The salmonella outbreak is the second in two years involving peanut butter. Salmonella is the nation's leading cause of food poisoning; common symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Peanut Corp. expanded its own recall Sunday to all peanut butter and peanut paste produced since July 1 at its plant in Blakely, Ga. The recalled products were distributed to institutions, food service industries and private label food companies in 24 states. "We deeply regret that this product recall has expanded, and our first priority is to protect the health of our customers," said Stewart Parnell, president of Peanut Corp. Late Monday, Safeway said some of the products it makes, including Ready Pack Eating Right Kids Apples with Peanut Butter and Orchard Valley Harvest's Organic Bark Peanut Butter Cookies and Cream, may use peanut butter involved in the recall and asked customers to throw them out or return them to the store for a full refund. Kellogg Co. recalled 16 cracker and cookie products last week. The company said Monday that federal authorities have confirmed that salmonella was found in a single package of its peanut butter crackers: Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter, which had previously been recalled. Other recently recalled items that contain peanut butter: - Grocer Meijer, which operates 181 stores in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky: Meijer brand Cheese and Peanut Butter and Toasty Peanut Butter crackers. Peanut Butter and Jelly and Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. - Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery chain: Private Selection Peanut Butter Passion Ice Cream sold in stores named City Market, Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Scoopers, QFC and Smith's in 11 states, primarily in the West. Armstrong, a testicular cancer survivor who began a comeback to proARMSTRONG fessional cycling in Adelaide, Australia on Sunday, once sought a billion dollars in cancer funding from fellow Texan and avid mountain biker George W. Bush. He said at a news conference before the Tour Down Under race while Obama's sport of choice was basketball, not cycling, he hoped the incoming president would be receptive to his anticancer message and a champion of health-care reform. "I'm optimistic in this new administration. I'm optimistic because of" Obama, Armstrong said. "I think the best thing he can do is come in and reform our health-care system. And do I think he'll increase the funding? Yes, absolutely."
