A cluster of 25 Barbary apes _ a species of monkey usually weighing about 15-25 pounds _ moved to a popular beachside area some months ago where they have been stealing food, entering rooms through open windows and harassing tourists, officials said. The territory's tourism minister, Ernest Britto, has decided to kill the beach dwelling group, government spokesman Francis Cantos said. A RENEGADE GROUP OF "I can confirm that tourism minister MONKEYS will be killed by authorities Britto has decided to issue a license for a after annoying residents in Madrid, Spain. The cull," said Cantos. group of apes include 25 renegade monkeys, "The decision was not taken lightly. It two of which have been already killed. AP is a last resort," Britto told the Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper. The newspaper said two monkeys have already been captured and given lethal injections. The pack, part of the territory's population of around 200, invaded a sandy beach area called Catalan Bay where they remained because they were able to rummage for food. The area is popular with tourists and has a luxury hotel. Britto said he determined that the monkeys posed a danger to public health. The animals mainly inhabit the high ground of Gibraltar, a British colony off Spain's southern tip. The British Army, which is responsible for their care, has in the past often had to replenish Gibraltar's population with monkeys from Africa. Barbary apes also live in Morocco and north Algeria. Photo Oklahoma sheriff accused in sex-slave operation ARAPAHO, Okla. (AP) - Authorities have charged a western Oklahoma sheriff with coercing and bribing female inmates so he could use them in a sex-slave operation run out of his jail. Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess resigned Wednesday just as state prosecutors filed 35 felony charges against him, including 14 counts of second-degree rape, seven counts of forcible oral sodomy and five counts of bribery by a public official. Burgess, the top officer in the county of 26,000 since 1994, appeared in court Wednesday was released after posting $50,000 bail. "We are stunned," Undersheriff Kenneth Tidwell said Thursday. Attorney Steve Huddleston said that he has not had a chance to review all the allegations against his client, but that "Mr. Burgess is anxious to go to court and clear his name." Among other things. Burgess is accused of having sex with a female drug court participant who was in his custody. The crimes are to have occurred between October 2005 and April 2007. A federal lawsuit filed in October claims Burgess told one drug court participant he would have her sent to prison if she didn't comply with his sexual demands. The lawsuit, filed by 12 former inmates, alleges the sheriffs employees had them engage in wet T-shirt contests and offered cigarettes to those who would flash their breasts. One prisoner alleged she became a jail trusty with more freedom after agreeing to perform a sex act on Burgess, but lost that status when she later refused. Burgess also faces two counts each of sexual battery, rape by instrumentation and subornation of perjury, and one count each of engaging in a pattern of criminal offenses, indecent exposure and kidnapping. i - Li 797-1775 -4-. ~ AN OKLAHOMA SHERIFF is being charged with coercing and bribing female inmates to be a part of a sex-slave operation that was run out of his jail. The sheriff has more than 35 charges against for Golay, said afterward. Rutterschmidt's attorney did not comment. Prosecutors said the women recruited their prey from among the homeless of Hollywood, invested thousands of dollars in insurance policies on them and in putting them up in apartments, then drugged them and ran them over in secluded alleys. Both men initially appeared to have been victims of hit-and-run accidents, and police linked the cases only in late 2005 when a detective investigating one overheard a colleague describe a similar case. In his closing argument, Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace called the women "the worst of the worst." "They didn't need this money. They weren't poor and destitute. They went out of their way to target men who had nothing," the prosecutor said. The jury saw a secretly recorded videotape of the two in a lockup after their arrests. Prosecutors said the women collected $2.8 million from insurance policies on the lives of two homeless men who were killed in staged hit-and-runs. Golay s convictions carry potential sentences of life in prison without possibility of parole. The single conspiracy count returned against Rutterschmidt carries a sentence of 25 years to life. Jurors' struggles on some counts became evident Tuesday when they handed in some sealed verdicts and continued deliberating. On Wednesday, the panel asked for readings of testimony by three witnesses and a laptop to review DVDs entered in evidence. The women showed no reaction to the verdicts. AP Photo LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two elderly women accused of killing two homeless men to collect millions of dollars in insurance payouts were convicted Wednesday of conspiracy to murder, and one of them was convicted of the murders themselves. In an unusual step, the jury was to hear more arguments Thursday before deciding remaining counts in the case against Helen Golay, 77, and Olga Rutterschmidt, 75. The judge decided to take five initial verdicts. Golay was convicted of the first-degree murders of Kenneth McDavid, 50, in 2005 and Paul Vados, 73, in 1999. She was also convicted of the conspiracy counts in both killings. Rutterschmidt was convicted of conspiracy to murder McDavid for financial gain.
