LILONGWE, Malawi (AP) - Malawi is preparing for a return visit by pop star Madonna, whose efforts to adopt a Malawian toddler last fall sparked an international contro- I versy. The singer's New York-based publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said Madonna was going MADONNA to Africa to continue her work with the Raising Malawi organization, which supports the country's many AIDS orphans. She denied rumors that she is going to adopt another child. "She is overseeing the building of a children's health care center. She is absolutely not adopting another baby," Rosenberg said in a statement. Sources at Kumbali Lodge, the tree-covered ranch in the capital, Lilongwe, where Madonna and her entourage stayed last year, said her security team has arrived. She was expected on Monday. HOUSTON (AP) - Andre Agassi accidentally hit Steffi Graf in the face with his tennis racket, cutting his wife's lip, as the pair played a game while holding hands for a fundraiser following the U.S. Clay Court Championships finals on Sunday. Graf got three stitches from a doctor who had paid $70,000 for a trip to play tennis with the couple, officials said. "She's OK," Agassi said. "It was an unfortunate accident." The couple was in town for Agassi's part in a reality show called 'The Big Give,' an upcoming Oprah Winfrey production. An auction raised at least $225,000 Sunday for a Houston-area elementary school chosen for the show. National Briefs A Quick Look -••——- Biology professor says sonar makesfishdeaf BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - An assistant biology professor at Western Kentucky University suspects an increase in manmade sounds underwater make fish deaf. Michael Smith cited U.S. Navy sonar and oceanic shipping as possible noise pollution for fish, which use sound to find their way around and listen for predators. With the help of his student Reagan Gilley and a $10,000 grant, Smith will study the auditory system offish. The study will expose locallybought rainbow trout, silver perch and goldfish to various sound combinations at a special sound booth at the WKU Complex for Engineering and Biological Sciences. Afterward, tests will be performed to see whether there has been hearing loss. Thefish'sbrain waves will be recorded through electrodes while the fish listen to tones. "We give a series of pure tones to fish through an underwater speaker, and we increase the intensity of the tones until we detect brain-wave activity," Smith said. Powerful nor'easter hits the eastern seaboard NEW YORK (AP) - A powerful nor'easter pounded the East with wind and pouring rain Sunday, grounding airlines and threatening to create some of the worst coastal flooding in 14 years. The storm also flooded people out of their homes in the middle of the night in West Virginia. Other inland states faced a threat of heavy snow. One person was killed as dozens of mobile homes were destroyed or damaged by wind in South Carolina. The storm system already had been blamed for five deaths on Friday in Kansas and Texas. The Coast Guard had warned mariners to head for port because wind up to 55 mph was expected to generate seas up to 20 feet high, Petty Officer Etta Smith said Sunday in Boston. Airlines canceled more than 350 flights at the New York area's three major airports, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. More cancellations were expected throughout the day. Gonzales said Sunday he has done nothing improper in the firings of eight federal prosecutors in testimony prepared for his appearance before a Senate panel widely viewed as a last chance to save his job. "I have nothing to hide," Gonzales said in a statement released Sunday. Att. Gen. Gonzales says: "I have nothing to hide" WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, fighting to save his job, said in prepared Senate testimony Sunday he has "nothing to hide" in the firings of eight federal prosecutors but claimed a hazy memory about his involvement in them. Two Republican senators said Gonzales has yet to shore up his credibility amid shifting explanations of his role in the dismissals. Vice President Dick Cheney reaffirmed White House support for the attorney general — but left it to Gonzales to defend himself to lawmakers who have called for his resignation. In his 25-page statement, Gonzales apologized for embarrassing the eight U.S. attorneys and their families by letting their ousters erupt into a political firestorm that has engulfed the Justice Department since January. He maintained the firings were not improper, but said he remembers having only an indirect role in the plans beyond approving them. "I have nothing to hide, and I am committed to assuring the Congress and the American public that nothing improper occurred here," Gonzales said in prepared testimony released before he appears Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The panel, which oversees the Justice Department, is investigating whether the firings were. . politically motivated. "I am sorry for my missteps that have helped to fuel the controversy," he said. Gonzales added: "In hindsight, I would have handled this differently. ... Looking back, it is clear to me that I should have done more personally to ensure that the review process was more rigorous, and that each U.S. attorney was informed of this decision in a more personal and respectful way." Cheney said he and President Bush continue to have "every confidence" in Gonzales and looked forward to hearing his testimony. Improper hug causes scandal in Pakistan ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Pakistan's tourism minister says she fears for her life after clerics at a radical mosque issued an edict accusing her of sinning by hugging her French parachute jumping instructor, the state news agency reported. Minister of Tourism Nilofar Bakhtiar told a parliamentary committee of her fear on Saturday following the Taliban-style edict against her by Islamic clerics at Lai Masjid, or Red Mosque, in Islamabad, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. The clerics said the hug was "an illegitimate and forbidden act" and "without any doubt, she has committed a great sin." Two clerics at the mosque issued the edict against Bakhtiar last Sunday, demanding that she be sacked, her family punish her and she be made to ask for forgiveness after pictures in the Pakistani media showed Bakhtiar hugging her parachute jumping instructor at a fundraising jump in France. Hundreds of students from an Islamic seminary attached to the mosque have been running an anti-vice campaign in Islamabad, threatening music shops and brothels, in a bold challenge to President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, a U.S. ally who has pledged to promote moderate Islam. The mosque's chief cleric, Maulana Abdul Aziz, has threatened to stage suicide attacks if authorities try to raid the mosque. Bakhtiar rejected the edict last week, saying she had only received a pat from her instructor for her jump in France last month to raise money for victims of a devastating earthquake in Pakistan in 2005. Bakhtiar was not available for comment. "This took place inside the Justice Department," Cheney said on "Face the Nation" on CBS. "The one who needs to answer to that and lay out on the record the specifics of what transpired is the attorney general, and he'll do so." GOP Sens. Arlen Specter and Lindsey Graham said Gonzales has a difficult battle ahead in convincing the public he can lead the Justice Department. "The No. 1 question is, is he capable of administering the Department of Justice, did he have enough hands on to know what's happening?" said Specter of Pennsylvania, the Senate panel's top Republican. "Can he explain why these individuals were asked to resign and justify the reasons for doing so?" "He's got a steep hill to climb," Specter said. "He's going to be successful only if he deals with the facts." 110 South Highway 165, Providence • 787-1844 885 North Main Street, Logan • 753-2412 Order online at www.webtires.net Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Saturday FREE Late Night iCuliure.Corhmenfs DavidLetterman, April 16, 2007 Top Ten Signs You Have Bad Luck 10.
