Best free agent signing in the NFL? The Dolphins' signing of Joey Porter was the best move the Dolphins made since drafting Dan Marino. That may be a bit of a stretch, but It was still a great move. Porter Is a great pass rusher, and so is Jason Taylor, so putting them on the same field will cause a lot of problems for quarterbacks in the AFC East. Also, Porter gives the Dolphins a personality. They have been such a dull team for so long. Porter will give Miami something to talk about besides models, clubs, bikinis andD-Wade. . J ^ b v • ..'.#£ Travis Henry rushed for 1,200 yards with the Bills. Now that he is with the Denver Broncos, look for him to have more than 1,500. The Broncos have a young quarterback in Jay Cutler, so Henry will be the perfect addition to the offense. Keep in mind that the Broncos still have Mike Bell, so they will have a good one-two punch. 2. Is Lindsey Hunter's 10-game suspension fair? Hunter said the pills he got from his wife caused his positive test for a banned substance, phentermine, which is primarily used for weight loss. If you are a professional athlete and you are too stupid to scrutinize everything you put into your body, you deserve to miss 10 games. And I trust NBA Commissioner David Stern with everything except picking a basketball for our weekly pickup game, so I would blindly support him anyway. APARTMENTS According to Hunter, he and his wife share pills and he just made a bonehead mistake. I have no reason not to believe Hunter when he says that. The fact that he took his wife's weight loss pills is a little fishy. But where he has no previous history of getting into trouble, you have to give the guy a break. 3. Should Robe Bryant have been suspended? Of course not. This is Kobe Bryant we are talking about. This is a man that has scored 80 points in a game, won championships and changed his number mid-career. Would Michael Jordan have been suspended for this? No way. Kobe Bryant is a star - a star that can travel and push-off as much as he wants. What's so different about elbowing someone in the face? I see no difference. Rent $425] It makes me happy to see the NBA not letting stars get away with cheap shots. Anyone who has seen the replay cannot possibly say that what happened was because of his follow through. This is the second time that he has knocked someone out with his follow through. If it really was his normal follow through, why aren't his defenders going down holding their faces every game? 4. Besides the WAC, which tournament is most exciting? TIER I I TUITION PROPOSAL -Public ForumMARCH 20, 2007, 2:00 PM TAGGART STUDENT CENTER: SUNBURST LOUNGE All students and citizens are invited to U)C public hearing and comments are welcome. With the possibility of a third Duke and North Carolina game, it has to be the ACC. Watching a rivalry game that has the ability to break out into a brawl at any moment is just exciting. But Duke and North Carolina aren't the only attraction. The ACC is probably, top-to-bottom, the best conference in the nation. Good, fairly evenly matched teams make for excitement, and that's what you get with the ACC Tournament. Tjpf II Tuition lunik will b</ .itIncited lo $u|ipott. 5. Weekly rant? (J.isi? There are so many different teams that have a realistic chance of winning. We already saw West Virginia drain 17 3-pointers in the opening round. Look for the rest of the tournament to be full of close games. Spring Break means two things: beer and March Madness. I'm not advocating the illegal consumption of alcohol, or forcing beer upon the world. I'm merely stating facts. Instead of getting a sun burn or contracting a disease in Mexico, may I suggest just staying at home and watching the NCAA Tournament? It's exciting. It's free. It's relaxing - especially when you throw beer into the equation. And if the tournament itself isn't enough, combine the beer and basketball to have a fun drinking game. But, be safe and have fun. . « rf From Wellness Education You Oughta Know Moody Irritable Hopeless Sleeping too much Anxious Sad You know how with some birthdays you get ripped off? For example, your birthday is on Christmas, and you only get one set of presents. Well, I want to talk about my birthday and how awesome it is. I was born on March 8. Yep, yesterday was my b-day. I have the pleasure of every year sharing my birthday with the beginning of March Madness. I still get presents, but I also get a ton of basketball. Thanks Mom and Dad for knowing when to give birth to me. Go Aggies. Four USU wrestlers qualify for nationals in Dallas BY SAM BRYNER Staff Writer The USU Wrestling Club traveled to the University of Colorado and competed in the Southwest Conference regional tournament in an effort to qualify for nationals. The Aggies competed against 13 other schools and finished seventh overall, qualifying four wrestlers for nationals. Tanner Purser led the way for the Aggies with a second place finish in the 125-pound weight class with a 3-1 record. His only loss came in the finals, 12-11. "He wrestled real solid and gave himself a chance to win, but just barely couldn't pull it off," club President Mike Haslam said. Another Aggie to place second was Tyler Thiessen, who competed in the 235pound weight class. He lost in the final match, 5-2, and ended the tournament with two wins and one loss. Other Aggies to place were Mark Haslam, with third place in the 14-1-pound class, Scott Snarr, with sixth place in the 184-pound division and Ben Shurtz, with fifth place in the 125-pound category. Mark Haslam placed third overall and finished with a record of 4-1. He was able to avenge his only loss to Colorado State wrestler Nick Medina when they met again in the match to decide who finished third or fourth. "He beat me my first match, and then he ended up losing in the semis and we met up again," Mark Haslam said. "I wanted a rematch because I knew that I could beat him and shouldn't have lost to him the first time." Any wrestler who placed in the top four qualified for the national tournament in Dallas. Purser, Thiessen and Haslam all qualified by placing in the top three and Ben Shurtz who finished in fifth place was able to get in because another wrestler dropped out. "I was very happy with our team performance," Haslam said. "To finish in seventh place was amazing considering we only had five wrestlers who competed and only four were able to count towards our team score, while the other teams ahead of us had 11 wrestlers scoring points." -samabry@cc.usu. edu Cal upsets No. 4 UCLA in tourney Visit the Student Wellness Center www.usu.edu/swc 797.1660 We're here to help, just ask. LOS ANGELES (AP) Ayinde Ubaka scored eight of his career-high 29 points in overtime and California stunned fourth-ranked UCLA 76-69 in the Pac-10 tournament quarterfinals Thursday night. UCLA's second straight loss dealt a serious blow to its hopes of being a No. 1 seed in next week's NCAA tournament. The five-minute overtime turned into a blowout, with Cal outscoring the Bruins 15-8. The game was a rematch of last year's Pac-10 title game, won by UCLA on its way to a runner-up finish in the national championship game. Ryan Anderson added 18 points for the eighthseeded Golden Bears (1616), who blew a 16-point first-half lead but survived to advance to a semifinal Friday night against Oregon. Darren Collison had 20 points, Josh Shipp 19 and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute 13 for the top-seeded Bruins (26-5), who lost their regular-season finale at Washington. UCLA's Arron Afflalo, the Pac-10's player of the year, had his worst offensive performance of the season with three points, ending a streak of 29 games in double figures. |
