Show The Utah Statesman ;1O_ Monday, Jan. 8,2007 / WINTER BREAK MEN'S BASKETBALL RECAP Cougars snap three Aggie win streaks BY D A V I D BAKCR Staff Writer The Brigham Young Cougars were streak killers as they defeated USU 75-62 on Dec.l6, 2006. The loss ended USU's eight-game winning streak, their four-game winning streak against BYU and their streak of making a three-point basket in 127 games. How did it happen? "Sometimes you play like crap," Head Coach Stew Morrill said in the post-game radio interview. "We played like crap. BYU was a big reason why we played like crap ...We're playing a better team, on their court, and that's how you get your fanny kicked. And we got our fanny kicked." The game was tied three times early, but after an Austin Ainge basket gave BYU the lead, they never looked back. The Aggies cut the lead to eight with about a minute left in the first half and ended the half down 3828. In the second half, USU was never able to get the lead below double digits. Morrill chalks up 200 win The Aggies' offense never got on track. Morrill attributed this to breakdowns and playing outside the offense. USU only had two assists in the first half and seven in the game. "We took bad shots, and that's how you shoot 36 percent and zero from three,"' he -said. Jaycee Caroll led the Aggies with 16 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Michael Earl had a career-high performance with 10 points. -dabake@cc.usu.edu BY C . The victory put USU's home non-conference winning streak at 42 games. The last time USU lost a nonconference home game during the regular season was on Jan. 8, 2000 to BYU 82-73. Aggie guard Jaycee Carroll led all scorers with a season-high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Junior forward Stephen DuCharme recorded his first double-double as an Aggie with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Aggies opened by hitting nine of theirfirst13 shots (64 percent), stretching the lead to 32-13 on a Carroll 3-pointer before IPFW cut it to40-31athalftime. Coming out of the half, IPFW cut the Aggie lead to four points. The Aggies then went on a 5-0 run to put their lead back at nine points. With 8:05 left, Carroll hit another 3-pointer to stretch the team's lead to 62-48. The Aggies didn't look back after that. IPFW was led by Jaraun Burrows, who tallied 17 points, as well as Zelijko Egeric who collected 11. IPFW shot 44 percent from the field as well as 35 percent from behind the three-point line. Over the course of the game, the Aggies converted on 20 of 26 free throws (76 percent). Senior forward Chaz Spicer had 10 points for USU, while teammate Durrall Peterson dished out a seasonhigh six assists to go along with six points. Junior guard Kris Clark ended afive-gamescoring drought by contributing four points. -sbhislop@cc.usu.edu USU's 65-49 win over CS Bakersfield, only in their first year competing in the NCAA's Division-I, could be described as underwhelming. "That's the kind of game I was expecting coming off the holiday break," Head Coach Stew Morrill said of the sloppy affair. USU had 17 assists, barely eclipsing their 16 turnovers. Junior guard Kris Clark, starting at point guard, led USU in assists with five while nearly everyone was guilty of turning the ball over; six players turned it over at least twice. Morrill tried to be upbeat but was clearly perturbed by his team's performance in his post-game conference. When a reporter asked him about getting his 200th win at USU, Morrill answered, "It means I've been here a damn long time." Bakersfield was led in scoring by center Carl Damus, with 12 points, and guard Dwuan Rice, with 11. The visitors even took an 11-10 lead early on off a Rice three-pointer. She also earned three straight shutouts and eight total on the season. "For Ali to be recognized is fantastic," Head Coach Heather Cairns said. "I'm sure she's the first one to share that honor with her defense. If it weren't for them, she might not have those individual stats. The whole season I kept saying, 'Those five are so good together.' I think all of them can be excited about that award." The Aggie defense held an impressive streak of shutout minutes with 364 straight scoreless minutes. The defensive line was one of the key elements that contributed to the success of the team this season, Cairns said. "Defense, especially down the stretch, was such that it really gave us an opportunity to win games," Cairns said. With two years of play eligibility remaining, Griffin should be an important asset to the team, Cairns said, f 4Griffin is currently second on the USU career saves list, and looks to take over the top spot over the next two seasons. "Certainly having that milestone is great because she has two more years with us," Cairns said. -sethhawkins@,cc. usu.edu Don't forget to...
