The Utah Statesman Seahawks' Alexander out with broken left foot KIRKXAND, Wash. (AP) - League MVP Shaun Alexander has a broken left foot and will be lost to the Seattle Seahawks for at least a couple of weeks. Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that a bone scan revealed Alexander sustained a "small crack" and "displaced fracture" on a non-weight-bearing bone in his foot sometime during the Seahawks' 42-30 win over the New York Giants on Sunday. Alexander ran for 47 yards on 20 carries before sitting out the fourth quarter, which began with WEEKEND SHOPPING C !?lhi"*, • Dansko Shoes . The coach said last seasons NFL rushing leader was on crutches inside team headquarters Monday. "You lose the MVP for a while, it's a hit," Holmgren said. "Let's face it, he's the MVP. We're not going to sugarcoat it." Alexander missed practices last Wednesday and Thursday because of soreness from a bone bruise he sustained while rushing for 51 yards on 19 carries in the Sept. 10 season opener at Detroit. Holmgren said that bone bruise led to the small crack. $5.95 talk about a good thing." Alexander has started 69 of the last 70 games for the Seahawks. His only absence in that span was a 2002 start that he missed to help with the birth of his first daughter. He entered that game in the second quarter. Last season, Alexander rushed for 1,880 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has just 187 yards and an average of 2.9 yards per carry through three games. His career average is 4.5 yards per rush. He has gained fewer than 1OO yards in each of Seattle's three games this season, his first such streak in two years. Sunday, the Seahawks welcomed former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch by featuring four-wide receiver formations, and Matt Hasselbeck threw a franchise record-tying five touchdown passes. Maurice Morris will make his fourth career start for Alexander against the Bears. Morris rushed 15 times for 18 yards against the Giants on Sunday. "You have only one way to go," Holmgren said. "Just plug someone in and go." Saints bring new life to New Orleans NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The beignets at Cafe Du Monde tasted especially sweet. A French Market musician pounded out a peppy tune on his keyboard. Smiling, if somewhat weary, revelers strolled through the narrow streets of the French Quarter in their Reggie Bush jerseys and "Home Sweet Dome" T-shirts. "What A Show!" the local newspaper blared across its front page. Life in New Orleans had an air of normalcy Tuesday, the morning after the New Orleans Saints returned to the Superdome with a rousing, inspiring victory. But plenty of difficult questions remain for this team and its hurricaneravaged city. The population is still less than half what it was before Hurricane Katrina. Who knows if enough deep-pocketed companies will return to buy up those pricey club seats and luxury boxes. And the Superdome is still a 31-year-old stadium - all spruced up, to be sure, but ancient in the what-new-stadium-haveyou-built-for-me-lately NFL. "In terms of the Saints' future, we've got a ways to go," acknowledged Doug Thornton, who runs the Superdome and oversees its $185 million renovation. "There's no doubt the public will support the team. But there's always that issue of the economic base, the corporate base." The support was certainly there Monday night. An earsplitting crowd of 70,000 packed the Superdome for the Saints' 23-3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in a showdown of unbeaten NFC South rivals. AP File Photo/David J. Phillip, Poo! SPOT From page 8 USU (9-7, 2-0) is coming off of two four-game wins last weekend against Fresno State and San Jose State. NMSU took down Idaho and Boise State last week in three games apiece. New Mexico State is certain to give USU fits. It's clear why they are undefeated when the following stats are considered: the southern Aggies have a .299 attacking percentage this year (USU has gone above that six times this season). Plus, NMSU has held its opponents to a .099 average attacking percentage, while USU's average is .167"New Mexico State is obviously a very good volleyball team," USU Head Coach Grayson DuBose said. "They're ranked and they deserve to be ranked. They have beat some nice opponents." NMSU ranks first in the WAC in team hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, blocks per game (3.06), kills per game (15.76) and service aces (126). The southern Aggies have two players (Amber Simpson and Kim Oguh) who are first and second in the WAC respectively in hittine percentage. On top of all that, NMSU has swept its last seven opponents, and has 12 sweeps overall this season. ''[Mike Jordan has] done a wonderful job over there," DuBose said. "He's got some nice athletes. We'll have to be on our A game if we're gonna have a shot." USU is led by Nielson, who is averaging 4.13 kills, 1.96 digs and 0.74 service aces per game. Freshman Hailey Jeppson, who was tabbed as last week's WAC player of the week, is averaging 3.14 kills, 2.76 digs and .60 blocks per game. So far this season, NMSU is 17th in the nation in home attendance. A crowd of 2,437 witnessed NMSU defeat Boise State last week. DuBose is hoping USU Aggie fans will put up the same kind of effort. "Hopefully we can get a lot of fans out," he said. "That would be great to have a big, loud crowd for when they come up here and make it a bad experience for them." The last team to beat NMSU was USU on Nov. 25, 2005, in the WAC tournament. -sbhislQp(5icc.iisu.edu i |
