In the international competition, Fischer placed fifth out of 45 competitors in the airtime division, and Morris placed 11th of 45 in the distance division. In Austria, the competitors were given one day to practice in the large, glass hangar in the Salzburg Airport, where the competition was held, and got to meet other qualifying students from around the world. "I learned a lot," Morris said. "There were people there from Lebanon and different conflicting countries. It was cool to see how people from countries at war can get along in this Olympic-like setting." Fischer said the competition was a once- in-a-lifetime opportunity. "It was fun, a pretty trip, kinda random and I'm glad I went," Morris said. He said the purpose of the competition was to get recognition for Red Bull, because the students were trying to break the world records in those categories. He said he threw out his arm during the practice day, but the student from Croatia who ended up taking first did not beat his record from the USU competition. The grand prize winners won a flight in a twin-seat fighter jet, while second and third received airline credits. -dilewis@cc.usu.edu 1000 N. Cemetery Spectrum ••• 700 N. J\ I *M USU Campus Utah soldier killed in Iraq ambush ROY, Utah (AP) - A 19-year-old Army soldier from northern Utah died in an ambush after a bomb flipped his truck in Iraq, his father said. The U.S. Defense Department announced Dan Dolan's death Tuesday, a day after informing his parents. "He wanted to serve his country, and he was proud to do it. We were proud of him," father Tim Dolan said. Dolan and at least three other soldiers were in a truck that was hit by a roadside bomb Sunday in Baghdad, he said. "They tried to put it back on its wheels and got ambushed," Tim Dolan said. Dolan enlisted in the Army after graduating from Roy High School, near Ogden, in 2005. Tim Dolan said his son was sent to Kuwait in June and moved to Baghdad about a month later. "He was calling us once a week, just to let us know he was OK," Tim Dolan said. "He was in good spirits. He was gung-ho." Tim Dolan said his son loved hockey. While in junior high, he played on Roy's varsity team, which advanced to the state semifinals. "They went 14-0 during that season. It was one of the most awesome teams I've ever seen," Tim Dolan said. The body of another Utah soldier, Marine Cpl. Adam Galvez, was returned to Salt Lake City on Monday. Galvez, 21, died Aug. 20 when a roadside bomb exploded under his vehicle. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday.
