| Show citizens ask for removal of cas gas tanks at the meeting of the city council held on friday evening ot last week it was decided to put a stop to card playing in the soft drink establish ments merits pool halls and confectionery stores of the city this matter was discussed at some length the city at torney being asked to prepare a new ordinance and have it ready for pas bage at the next meeting of the city council information which haa has been secured from various sources con vinces the city officers that there Is a lot of gambling going on here and they have decided to stop all card playing while this new ordinance is chiefly tor for the purpose of doing away with gambling tt it Is also a war measure such as has been put into effect in other parts of the country the council at this meeting also received a petition from about sixty residents of the eastern or summit end of the city asking that the con tin oil company be restrained from erecting another large basol no n tank in that neighborhood also that this company be forced to remove the large tank which has been there for or a number of years and which them the believe is endangering the lives and property of people living in the neighborhood this petition was presented by E B and ed H elliott who live within a short distance from the tank and who ex the situation very thorough ly to the council the mayor and members of the city council promis ed these petitioners that immediate action would be taken and with that end in view they arranged for a ape caal meeting on monday night when they made an inspection of the pro perty ot of the oil company there is no question but what the people liv ing at the summit have just cause for complaint and vie he city officers should see to it that the gasoline tanks are put outside the city limits prof I 1 L williamson Will lamson acting ju u venile judge for the district sent the council a communication in which he called attention to the need of a detention room for juvenile offenders at the present time there is no way of properly caring for these boys who must either be given their liberty or committed to I 1 the state reform school the coun cil decided to act on the suggestion of the juvenile court officer and it is quite probable that a detention room will be fitted up where the boys can be held while awaiting trial or where they can serve out sentences for offenses which are not serious enough to bring aboaf their to the reform school it has been shown that a number of boya boys of tender years have been fre buenting qu enting pool and card rooms bills against the city were r read ea d and ordered paid after which th the e council adjourned until the first fri day in october |
