LOUIS'-Although they were 15 games under .500, the San'Francisco Giants are hanging around in the National League Western Division, and they hadn't , had their closer (Armando j' < Benitez) for four months. Of course, they also hadn't had the seven-time Most Valuable Player in the National League for even one minute. "When we play the game, we don't think about him," said Giants manager Felipe Alou, whose team was seven games out entering ""Wednesday's game. "It's when we're not playing the game that we think about him. "He's the MVP. I believe that any MVP - it doesn't have to be Bonds - could probably make up a six-game difference." Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who has been trying to counteract Bonds for 10 years, said: "When you take the most significant slugger out of our, lineup, it's like us play1 ing without Albert (Pujols). There's no way you replace that. There are some guys you can plug in, but there are other guys you just can't replace." There is one sure upshot of Bonds being out with his bad knees. The Giants will finish last in the league in intentional walks. They have been issued only 19, which was a good week last year for Bonds, who was walked intentionally a staggering 120 times out of 232 passes for the season. The fans at SBC Park in San ^Francisco no longer are waving rubber chickens for Bonds' intentional walks, let alone the fact that kayak rentals (to retrieve Bonds home runs) in McCovey Cove behind the , right-field wall are virtually r_ ^nonexistent. f_, "It's been disastrous," Ted Choi, owner of City Kayak, told The Associated Press. Another likely effect of Bonds being out is that Pujols, runner-up to Bonds in the MVP balloting two of the past four seasons, will become this year's MVP because of his ppwn statistics and the fact that Bonds will have little or none to show for the season. "(Pujols) is an MVP," Alou said. "He's the guy, although o there are some other candidates. "But I don't have any doubt, and the players and managers on every team know who the MVP should be. Tvegot to sav that this vear Pujols has a much greater opportunity. There are going to be some other guys like Derrek Lee and Andruw Jones, but I hope Pujols wins it. And I hope that something like what happened to Juan Marichal doesn't happen to him." Marichal, Alou's longtime teammate with the Giants and a fellow Dominican, never won a Cy Young Award, although he did make the Hall of Fame. Marichal had seasons of 25-8 in 1963, 25-6 in 1966 and 26-9 in 1968 and didn't win the Cy Young on any occasion, finishing behind Sandy Koufax in the first two of those seasons and the Cardinals' Bob Gibson and his record-setting 1.12 earned-run average in 1968. "He never won the Cy Young, so Pujols better win it quick," Alou said. "I'm not going to say it's 100 percent (for Pujols) because I played with Marichal. We knew for sure who was going to win it, and he never won." Giants righthander Brett Tomko, a former Cardinal, said •Pujols' numbers "are going to show he definitely should win-or could win. Albert's definitely put it up over the last four years to deserve it. If Barry wasn't around, Albert probably would have three of them already." Bonds generally has kept his own counsel-or at least his Web site's counsel-about his rehabilitation. "We hear every once in a while," Alou said. "I know the office is getting some updates weekly and sometimes every three or four days. I don't worry about it." Bonds has contradicted himself on occasion, so the Giants aren't entirely sure if and when Bonds will be back. Alou, however, expects Bonds to be available in September, steroids controversy revisited or not. "I think it will be good for him to play, as opposed to missing a complete year," Alou said. "If he can play 15 or 20 games, anywhere between 80 and 100 ai-bats, that would be tremendous for him. I'm not even talking (about the) team anymore or winning. I'm talking about a man missing an entire season. I don't know when was the last time a man of that age (41) missed an entire season and came back." It would seem now that it's so late in the season and it has been so long since Bonds has been in the clubhouse, the circus would have left town. "It's still a circus atmosphere because you see it on TV all the time," Tomko said. "You can't go a day without hearing about it." Is he coming back? Is he not coming back?
