WASHINGTON (AP) - A makeover for the food pyramid — that triangle-shaped guide to better eating — might renew interest in healthy habits, but officials say it likely will take time to make a difference for Americas growing girth. "We didn't get to be obese overnight We're not going to reverse it overnight," said Eric Hentges, the Agriculture Department official who is overseeing the new pyramid. After months of revision, a new symbol for healthy habits was being introduced Tuesday. The image has been kept under wraps, but the real question is whether Americans — two out of three of whom are overweight if not obese — will follow the new guide no matter what'its shape. People have steadily grown fatter since the food pyramid debuted in 1992. A report last month in The New England Journal of Medicine contended that obesity, particularly in children, was fueling a reversal in life expectancy, shaving four to nine months off the average life span. 17 prisoners released from Guantanamo Bay KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) Seventeen Afghan men released from the U.S. detention center for terror suspects in Guantanamo Bay have arrived in Afghanistan and are being turned over to local authorities, in what appeared be the largest single release of prisoners since September, officials said Tbesday. Abdul Wakil Omari, a spokesman for the Afghan Supreme Court, said the men would be formally handed over during a ceremony at the court later Tuesday. He did not say how many prisoners had been released, but other officials put the number at 17. "There are seventeen of them and they are being handed over to the Afghan National Security Council," a senior Afghan official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The security council oversees the country's various intelligence agencies. VATICAN CITY - The smoke wafting into the sky Tuesday appeared to beVhite, but was it? Nobody could be sure as 17 agonizing minutes ticked by on the ornate clock atop S t Peters Basilica. Then the bells below began to toll and people screamed in joy. More than 100,000 faithful overflowed St Peter's Square and spilled into the streets of Rome to cheer as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany emerged from the red velvet drapes of the basilica as Pope Benedict XVI. "Benedetto!" the crowd chanted. "Viva il Papa!" National flags waved above the multitudes. People from six continents hugged their neighbors and jumped in joy. Many shed tears of bliss; some wept in disappointment. "We love you!" screamed Hans Gonzalez, 31, of San Francisco, pumping his arms in the air. The announcement of a new pope kept everyone guessing to the end. People had been packing the square since Monday evening to watch the Sistine Chapel chimney for signs of the election. Black smoke meant an unsuccessful ballot; white smoke — accompanied by bells — meant the cardinals had chosen a new pope. When the smoke went up at 5:4*5 p.m., it seemed white. But after two false alarms in as many rounds of voting, no one was sure. People argued about the color of the smoke. §ome sections of the crowd were silent; others jumped in the air chanting, NFW POPF See page 9 seepages AP Photoflhe Austin American-Statesman, Jay janner ST. Study aims to prevent spread of HIV among California migrant laborers BY LAURA WIDES Associated Press AP Photo/Lenny Ignelzi ALICIA VERA. San Dieeo outreach coordinator for the Universitywide Aids Research Program, talks with a migrant worker named Jaime, as he waits for day labor in Vista, Calif., Tuesday. FALLBROOK, Calif. - On survey days, Alicia Vera rises bleary-eyed before dawn, downs a cup of coffee and heads for nearby fields and churches to help stop the spread of AIDS. She is working on one of the most comprehensive studies yet on AIDS and HIV risk among the state's estimated 1.3 million migrant farm laborers. By contacting workers on their own turf, researchers hope to break down economic and cultural barriers that isolate what they call an invisible population. "Previous studies of the migrant population have generally shown a fairly high amount of risk behavior but not a lot of HIV? said George Lemp, director of the Universitywide Aids Research Program being done by the University of /VilPiRANT A I L J S See page 20 CATCH OF THE MY SANTA MONICA, Calif.
