In a Feb. 18 story titled "USU students take nursing to an international level," it was implied that Weber State University or Utah State University may have sponsored the project, which is not the case. The organization Volunteer Nurses is not associated with any state, national or international groups and is not an approved non-profit organization. Also, when leaving for the Phillippines, the volunteers will not be licensed to practice as nurses, as might also have been inferred. Monaj Briefs ^ Utah avalanche survivors beaten up but undeterred SALT LAKE CITY - Even as they recovered from grisly injuries Saturday morning, the three men who survived an avalanche near Kessler Peak in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Friday vowed to return to their backcountry playground. It's proof that winter thrill-seekers will risk nearly everything to tell nervy tales of outdoor machismo. Though next time, Bruce Meisenheimer — one of the trio — said he would "assess things a little more closely." "I'm feeling pretty beat up" Meisenheimer said less than 24 hours after he and two friends were buried waist-deep in the deluge of snow. Its an understatement for the Salt Lake City man with a bone-deep cut that begins at his hairline and runs right between his eyes. PINELLAS PARK, Fla. their hopes fading and legal options exhausted, Terri Schiavo's family appeared quietly resigned Sunday to watcliing her die and asked protesters to spend Easter with their families as the severely brain-damaged woman went a ninth day without food or water. Outside the hospice where Schiavo is being cared for, protesters were not as calm. Five were arrested as ministers attempted to bring Schiavo Easter communion. About a halfdozen people in wheelchairs later got out of them and lay in the driveway, shouting "We're not dead yet!" Later, a priest said he gave Schiavo a drop of wine on her tongue. Thaddeus Malanowski said he could not give her a fleck of bread because her tongue was dry. The priest's announcement drew applause and cheers from the crowd, which spent most of the day heckling police and protesting loudly. The noise prompted Schiavo's brother, Bobby Schindler, to come out and ask protesters to tone down their behavior. "We are not going to solve the problem today by getting arrest-: ed," he told the restless crowd of about three dozen people. Schiavo's husband and parents have battled for years over whether the 41-year-old woman wanted to live or die. The two sides have given differing opinions of her status. Antoine Gebara, mayor of the northeastern Beirut area of Bouchrieh, said the explosion was caused by a bomb placed near the buildings in an industrial area. "It appears it is an explosive charge that was placed there," Gebara told Lebanese Broadcasting Corp. "They must love us — we got it twice in a week," he said referring to an explosion in the nearby predominantly Christian neighborhood of Jdeideh last Saturday that injured nine people. A bomb on Wednesday killed three people in a Christian commercial center. Witnesses said the blast on the eve of the Easter holiday occurred three hours before Catholics were to head to a midnight Mass. WASHINGTON — Black and Asian women with bachelors degrees earn slightly more than similarly educated white women, and white men with fouryear degrees make more than anyone else. A white woman with a bachelor's degree typically earned nearly $37,800 in 2003, compared with nearly $43,700 for a college-educated Asian woman and $41,100 for a college-educated black woman, according to data being released Monday by the Census Bureau. Hispanic women took home slightly less at $37,600 a year. The bureau did not say why the differences exist. Economists and sociologists suggest possible factors: the tendency of minority women, especially blacks, to more often hold more than one job or work more than 40 hours a week, and the tendency of black professional women who take time off to have a child to return to the work force sooner than others. Employers in some fields may give extra financial incentives to young black women, who graduate from college at higher rates than young black men, said Roderick Harrison, a researcher at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a think tank that studies minority issues. "Given the relative scarcity, if you are a woman in the sciences — if you are a black woman — you would be a rare commodity" Harrison said. Because study in the area is limited, it is hard to pinpoint specific reasons, said Barbara Gault, research director at the Washington-based Institute for Women's Policy Research. "It could be the fields that educated black women are choosing" she said. "It also could be related to the important role that black women play in the total family income in African-American families. Notions that black women are struggling financially as much as other groups are should not be dismissed, Gault added. For instance, nearly 39 percent of families headed by a single black woman were in poverty, compared with 21 percent of comparable white women, according to census estimates released last year. A white male with a college diploma earns far more than any similarly educated man or woman — in excess of $66,000 a year, according to the Census Bureau. Among men with bachelor's degrees, Asians earned more than $52,000 a year, Hispanics earned $49,000 and blacks earned more than $45,000. KULA, Hawaii (AP) - Oprah Winfrey may be getting into the vacation rental business. The Maui County Council has given preliminary approval to a bill granting O.W. Ranch LLC a fiveyear conditional permit to operate a 12-bedroom vacation rental in Kula. Tom Welch, attorney for O.W. Ranch, would not confirm the celebrity's involvement in the venture, saying Winfrey likes to keep her personal life private. Gideon Kaufman, an Aspen, Colo.based legal representative for Winfrey and an officer of O.W. Ranch, said: "I'll let the initials stand for themselves." O.W. Ranch lists an address in care of Bob Greene, Winfrey's friend and personal trainer, according to Maui property tax records. Winfrey and Greene bought 102 acres on Maui's Hana Coast in 2002 with plans to build separate homes. A year later, O.W. Ranch bought the land in Kula, SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking his latest campaign to television. For Sunday's episode of the ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," the governor had a cameo promoting the use of solar electricity — something he's backing in California with his Million Solar Roofs Initiative. In the program, a home was renovated with a solar photovoltaic system that allows the house to produce its own electricity. Schwarzenegger's legislation would create a 10-year incentive fund to encourage both residential and commercial buildings to install solar power systems.
